New leadership selected for East Baton Rouge school board

Carla Powell-Lewis has been selected as president of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board with board member Patrick Martin V replacing her as vice president after a contentious meeting Thursday night.

Dadrius Lanus, the former board president and one of Superintendent Sito Narcisse’s most prominent supporters, withdrew his name from nomination to serve a second year as board president.

The meeting featured sharp comments and accusations.


The location on South Sherwood Forest Boulevard is the first Starbucks in Baton Rouge to have its workers unionize. The workers voted 10-4 in favor of unionizing, according to a news release from Starbucks Workers United.

The union says more than 9,000 baristas at 380 stores nationwide have successfully unionized since December 2021.


U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy and U.S. Rep. Garret Graves have already taken advantage of the new Raising Cane’s outlet at Union Station in the nation's capital.

The Washington, D.C., restaurant is decorated with illustrations from the historic Union Station.
