Happy March!

After the successful debut of our new Lit Flicks series, we're at it again with a showing of Wim Wenders' The American Friend, based on Patricia Highsmith's Ripley's Game. We've also got a new episode of Lit Cast, and a slew of co-presentations in the weeks to come. Here's to warmer weather and another busy month with Litquake!

Lit Flicks is a new monthly collaboration between Litquake and Alamo Drafthouse, presenting the best films adapted from written works, and introduced by special guests. Lit Flicks bookstore, operated by Borderlands Books, will be open at all screenings.

Wim Wenders’ “The American Friend”
Tuesday, March 31 • 6:30pm - 9:00pm
Alamo Drafthouse & Cinema SF
$16

Wim Wenders pays loving homage to rough-and-tumble Hollywood film noir with The American Friend, a loose adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s classic novel Ripley's Game. Dennis Hopper oozes quirky menace as an amoral American art dealer who entangles a terminally ill German everyman, played by Bruno Ganz, in a seedy criminal underworld as revenge for a personal slight—but when the two become embroiled in an ever-deepening murder plot, they form an unlikely bond. Special guest speakers: Mystery/Crime authors Laurie R. King and David Corbett. Talk at 6:30 pm, screening at 6:50 pm.

Lit Cast Episode 116: A Tribute to Zora Neal-Hurston

Co-presented with MOAD

In honor of the post-mortem publication of Zora Neal-Hurston’s short story anthology Hitting a Straight Lick With a Crooked Stick: Stories From The Harlem Renaissance, we put together a reading at the Museum of African Diaspora, here in San Francisco. After reading pieces of their favorite stories from the book, local authors, educators, and activists spoke to a sold out crowd about the legacy of Zora Neal-Hurston and how she has influenced the current literary zeitgeist. With a Q&A to wrap the whole thing up, this episode is one for remembrance and celebration.
