"Price rises are pushing many to the brink. Following the mortgage help announcements, the Chancellor's now met regulators for food, savings, fuel, water and telecoms to call for stronger help to fight inflation. There were a few announcements, many pushing for speed for things already in place. All helpful, but nowt game-changing.

"The truth is many people are ripping themselves off by inaction - sticking loyally with providers or the status quo - without realising that they're unnecessarily haemorrhaging money by doing so.

"So this is my call to self-arm with facts and tools to slash your bills, if you haven't already. Below the team and I will take you through key areas the state is trying to tackle, and more importantly, how to take matters into your own hands and (politely) fight back..."

Water firms have been facing intense criticism over often shocking images and statistics about water pollution and leaks. Bills have risen by 7.5% on average already this year in England and Wales (5% in Scotland). Yet a report last week in The Times indicates some firms are asking to increase prices by 40% over the next few years, to pay for investments in infrastructure.

Enough about the ocean of water firm woes, what do you do to help yourself? Perversely the water industry is privatised, with no competition, so you can't switch, but there are other routes. Full help in our Cut water bills guide, including sewage rebates, but the big ones are...

1. Some save £100s switching to a water meter - can you? This applies to England and Wales only. Martin's rule of thumb is...

More or the same number of bedrooms in your home than people (eg, three bedrooms, two people)? A water meter is likely to save you cash. Try a water calculator to get a better picture.

As Tinkerbaby tweeted: "@MartinSLewis Been telling parents for a long time to get a meter, they pay £1,400 as a couple. Dad now getting it installed and it's likely he'll save £900/yr. Wish he'd done it years ago."

2. Can't have a water meter fitted? If you're told it's impracticable, don't give up. You can ask for an assessed charge to save instead.

3. On Universal Credit, benefits or have low household income? 5.7m ELIGIBLE HOUSEHOLDS ARE MISSING OUT on an estimated £160/yr via social tariffs, plus some with three or more children, or a medical condition which means you need to use more water, may be able to have bills capped under the WaterSure scheme.

4. Grab water-saving FREEBIES. See what freebies are available, and also 30 ways to cut your water usage.

In April, mobile firms hiked bills for those in-contract often by 4% above inflation - so 17% in total - outrageous. Martin's long publicly called for a ban on this (and finally a consultation on tightening rules against above inflation mid-contract rises is due to report this month). Many are paying four or five times more than needed. So what to do...

First, text INFO for free to 85075. It'll usually show if you're out of contract, thus free to switch.

Then contrast what you pay with the cheapest new Sim deal. Here you keep your handset & number, but just change who you pay for calls, data etc. Our Cheap Sims tool will find your winner, yet here are some examples to inspire. All are unlimited UK texts & calls.

The price factors in any promos such as Amazon vouchers (it's explained via the links). At the very least, they can be used to haggle down your own cost once you're out of contract:

- Lebara (uses Vodafone's signal) 5GB for '£3.45' each mth

- iD Mobile (on Three's signal) 100GB for '£7.84' each mth

To keep your number, text 'PAC' to 65075. Then you're given a code to send to your new provider, who'll transfer it usually in about two hours.

Dawn emailed earlier this month: "I used your links to check if I was out of contract, then your Sim comparison to reduce my monthly bill from £34/mth to £5/mth on the same network - saving me nearly £300/yr. I don't think people realise how easy and quick it is. Thanks again." Lots more help in our Mobile cost cutting guide.

Broadband providers also hiked in-contract prices by as much as 14% in April. Yet 7m of you are out of contract and free to leave. And while the cost of the cheapest deals have risen, they're still half the price most pay. Our Cheap Broadband tool will show what's available in your area.

Switching is easy if you're out of contract. Do tell your existing provider before you go, it may cut the price to keep you. Here are today's key deals - the price factors in any promos such as an Amazon voucher, it's detailed via the links:

- Cheapest fibre. Shell Energy 38Mb for '£19.38/mth'
- Cheapest 'good service' fibre. Vodafone 67Mb for '£21.21/mth'
- Cheapest superfast fibre. Virgin Media 132Mb for '£22.06/mth'

4.3m households on benefits miss out on social tariffs

If you know to ask, over 20 firms now offer discounted social broadband tariffs - long-term cheap prices on standard speeds (eg, BT £15/mth for 36Mb speed). Yet only 5% of those eligible are on them. Uniquely, we include them in our comparison tool if you click 'show social tariffs', so you can see them next to standard deals.

Last week, the Govt agreed with regulator Ofcom that it'd push to raise awareness of them, and push more suppliers to offer them.

As Pauline emailed last week about her social tariff: "Thank you to Martin and all of his team. After watching your programme a number of times, I decided to overhaul my finances. I qualified for Vodafone Essential broadband. I was paying BT £28/mth, but now I'm paying £12/mth for Vodafone - saving £192/yr."

A fortnight ago, when Martin met the Chancellor to suggest mortgage help measures, he also pushed that a far less painful way to help improve inflation was to ensure savings rates were passed on. Jeremy Hunt echoed that last week, even citing Martin. Now bank execs are being hauled in front of the City watchdog over it.

Top easy-access unlimited withdrawals: Family BS 4.35%, yet for those saving under £4,000, via our link Kroo* pays 4.1% and gives a £10 Amazon voucher - factor that in and it beats Family.

The regulator and MPs are investigating whether supermarkets are profiteering, as wholesale prices have fallen yet little's been passed on to shoppers. Many have already cut to the bone (and we don't mean a T-bone), but if not, there are some tips that may help in our 30+ supermarket shopping tips guide. Here are the key ones to put in your trolley.

- 40+ supermarket discount coupons, including free £2 dog treats, Tesco £3 off code, £1.50 off Kellogg's cereal. Use digital coupons to nab free or cheap food. See 40+ supermarket coupons.
- Supermarket comparison tool finds cheapest supermarket for your items. Trolley lets you benchmark costs.
- Play online grocery runaround to bag £50+ off. Get discount codes to bag big reductions at your first web shop of each supermarket.
- Try Martin's Downshift Challenge. Nearly 20yrs old now, and since Martin stopped doing it on the telly it's become a much-hackneyed staple of other shows. It works though, try a Downshift Challenge.
- Buy beyond-best-before items at huge discounts. Items that have past their best-before dates, but are still safe to eat. Find online beyond-best-before stores.

Fuel prices are down compared to last year's record highs, but still up a whopping 30% on 2020. The Competition and Markets Authority has accused supermarkets in particular of profiteering at the pumps - saying the lack of competition cost an extra 6p/litre last year.

The Government says it'll change the law to force retailers to be more transparent, to increase competition. It wants a price reporting scheme so you can compare prices. Yet, to an extent, you can do that already:

To find the cheapest petrol station in your area, use website / app PetrolPrices.com, eg, on Tue, we found a 21p/litre difference in prices within one five-mile area.

Yet the data for this is from a combination of analysis and crowdsourcing. Real-time direct data from retailers, which is what's proposed, will be welcome. That's just a first step though, there's lots more help in our Cheap petrol & diesel guide, including...

- Make your car more fuel-efficient. Keep tyres properly inflated, take the roof rack off, dejunk your trunk & more. Fuel-optimise your motor.

It's the bonfire of the 0% balance transfers as banks dump best deals

Paying interest on credit card debt? CHECK ASAP if you can save £100s switching to 0%, as deals get worse by the day

Last week, we warned of rumours that some lenders were on the brink of pulling top 0% balance transfer deals. Sadly they then did, and we don't think it'll stop here. So if you've existing debt, don't delay. A balance transfer is the key cost-cutting weapon - it's where you get a new card that pays off debt on old credit and store cards for you, so you owe it instead, but at 0% interest. That means more of your repayments clear the actual debt rather than just covering interest. It's worth starting by looking at how some of last week's best buys have changed...

Three rules to help pick which card is right for you:

Go for the lowest fee, within a 0% time long enough to clear your debt. Most balance transfer deals charge a one-off % fee of the debt transferred (eg, 3% is £30 per £1,000 transferred) - so you want to minimise that. If you can repay within 19mths the NatWest NO-FEE* card is an easy winner, as there's no cost at all. If you're unsure, play safe and go for the longest card you can get, as the fee is less important than making sure you stay on 0%.
Realism counts, ensure you're comparing the cards that are likely to accept you. To avoid rejection, the best route is to spend two minutes on a 0% eligibility calculator. This shows your bespoke acceptance odds for most top cards, so you can minimise applications - which mark your credit file - protecting your ability to get future credit.
If you've a good chance of a non 'up to' card, it's likely the winner. With 'up to' cards, even if accepted, you may be given a shorter 0% and a higher fee. So unless the eligibility calculator shows you a guaranteed rate for an 'up to' card, if you've an equally good chance of a similar non 'up to' card, then these are safer as you know if you're accepted you'll definitely get the full deal.

Getting a card? ALWAYS follow the Balance Transfer Golden Rules:
a) Never miss the min monthly repayment, or you could lose the 0% deal and it'll cost far more.
b) Clear the card (or balance-transfer again) before the 0% ends, or the rate rockets to the higher APR.
c) Don't spend or withdraw cash. It usually isn't at the cheap rate and withdrawals hit your ability to get future credit.
d) The balance transfer must usually be done within 1 to 3mths to get the 0% and any cashback - check your card.

New. Cheap way to spend abroad and FREE £175

The cheapest way to spend abroad is the right plastic. Most cards add a 3% fee on top of the near-perfect exchange rates the banks themselves get. Specialist cards don't, so you get the near-perfect rate in every country, every time you go away. Full help in Top cards for travelling abroad, but there's news:

- New. FREE £175 bank switch, with top service, and now cheap overseas spending. New First Direct* bank account customers get £175 to switch to it, a 7% linked regular saver, £250 0% overdraft and 90% 'great' rated customer service. Plus, it's now dropped all its debit (not credit) card overseas fees. Switching help & options: Best bank accounts. Existing First Direct customer help: First Direct drops overseas fees. Alternative: Chase debit card* - you needn't switch bank, there's no hard credit-check and you get 1% spending cashback (max £15/mth).

You'll almost all have heard of ChatGPT - the artificial intelligence chatbot is the talk of 2023 - shaking up education and information industries worldwide. Its strength and weakness is it's a 'large language model' powered by a sweep of almost all the internet. Today we're launching an unique experimental version of MSE ChatGPT - you can ask it questions and get answers powered by MSE's guides. For now, it's only available in the free MSE App (later we hope to roll it out further).

To get MSE ChatGPT, download the free MSE App If you've not tried the app yet (why not?), it's all of MSE in an app, plus some extras too. You can download it, it's free (obvs) at Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store for Android. You'll see MSE ChatGPT at the bottom menu of the app, on the right-hand side.

MSE ChatGPT is a focused chatbot. It uses the standard ChatGPT underlying tech, but when you ask it questions and follow-ups, the prime information source is a weekly sweep of our guides, blogs and info. Yet that does mean it is best for 'how do you' questions rather than 'what's today's best' ones.

I wanted to build it to solve two problems. As soon as I heard about ChatGPT (early, as Mrs MSE's long been making shows on it), I had the grimace as I said we should try our own version. I hope it may help fix two issues...

The ChatGPT problem - who's providing the info? The main ChatGPT answers beautifully, and is great for writing a best man's speech. Yet it's unsourced and can get things wrong, so it's dangerous to trust it for answers, especially on your finances. And the info's outdated, it's answering from an internet sweep from 2021.
The MSE problem - how do you find the info? Ever since I set up MSE, people have always said: "There's too much information, I struggle to find what I want, can't you just tell me?" I hope that's what this new tool will do.

Be aware it's EXPERIMENTAL - play with it, let it help, but always check MSE's guides before acting. This is our first try, we've worked hard and fast just to get it to this point, yet like main ChatGPT it isn't perfect. We're working on improving it (especially to get it to add key links, but that's proved tricky), and for many areas it's already a great jumping-off point for you to explore key answers. Just ALWAYS double-check the main guides before you act to be sure.

Please have a play, both because we think you'll enjoy it and find it useful, but also because it's only by people using it that we can improve it for you in the future. Please let us know what you think of MSE ChatGPT.

Is it unreasonable to ask my friends to pay me for taking them to the pub? I've two friends who usually get the bus to the pub on Fridays, while I usually drive if I'm going too. On the odd occasion when the bus isn't running or it's raining, I collect them and take them to the pub with me. But as time's gone by, they've stopped checking if the bus is running and wait for me to pick them up, and I feel I'm being taken for granted.
