New Orleans will have the first Black female sheriff in state history. The Chili Peppers honor Hawkins

By Chad Calder | Staff writer

New sheriff in town: Susan Hutson will become the first Black female sheriff in Louisiana’s history Monday. The granddaughter of a laborer slain by a White sheriff in East Texas 80 years ago was swept into office by a wave of reform-minded voters looking for a change. You can find out more about her in Jillian Kramer's profile.

Jazz Fest: Filling in for the Foo Fighters, the Red Hot Chili Peppers played to the largest crowd of the festival’s first weekend Sunday, honoring Taylor Hawkins during their set. Hawkins, the Foo Fighters drummer, died suddenly in March, forcing the band to drop out and the Chili Peppers to take their place. The day started wet but warmed up quickly, and there was a tribute totem to Dr. John and a few other firsts after two years off.

Grading the Saints: We won't know how well the Saints did in the 2022 NFL draft until the prospects get some playing time, but until that happens, you can read what the experts think. We've got a final breakdown of all their draft choices, as well as a recap of the team's undrafted free agent signings (an area the Saints typically excel in). In other Saints news, the team is reported courting the Honey Badger, and if you don't know what that means, you can find out here.

Thanks for starting your week with us. Check out NOLA.com for more news throughout the day.
