W R Lethaby's masterpiece built in the very early years of the twentieth century, combining Arts and Crafts ethos and styling with a stunning combination of unreinforced concrete and thatch. Lethaby, a major theorist, lived on site to ensure the build went as it should, working out solutions with the builders and negotiating with the patrons. His efforts were such that he never took on such an engagement again. But what a result! Both the exterior massing and the emotive way the interior arches die into the walls, with their typical letter-box windows, are top-rate. And there is a full-size copy of it built into the 21st floor of a hotel in Osaka for use as a wedding chapel! https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/6416364/Replica-of-English-church-built-on-21st-floor-of-Japanese-tower-block.html David Thomson | June 24, 2019 at 7:13 am | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: https://wp.me/poSLL-3JQ |
