Closing 21st September (International Day of Peace) - our annual Creative Writing Competition for a short story up to 1,500 words on the theme of courage. Open to anyone over 16. Friday 29 September to Monday 2 October inclusive - I welcome exhibition at Ely Cathedral South West Transept. Free. Audio guide voiced by Juliet Stevenson. A striking insight into global refugee crises over the last 70 years. Powerful images from the famous Magnum photographers collective reveal what it means to be a refugee - to be forced to flee your home, to face danger, upheaval, uncertainty, violence, even death, in a desperate bid to find a place of safety. Today's refugee crisis appears to be a vast, intractable problem. No one wants to take responsibility for the 21 million people who have fled their country. A global problem requires a global solution. Governments must act - and we can all do something to help, starting with three words: I welcome refugees. Sunday 1st October - Ben Jupp Memorial Lecture by Terry Waite, 7 p.m. at Ely Cathedral. Free, with a retiring collection for Amnesty International and Hostage UK. Terry Waite spent almost five years in solitary confinement as a hostage. During that time he had to battle to keep mentally, spiritually and physically alive. In his talk he will discuss the importance of language and memory in maintaining his wellbeing. Saturday 7th October - matinee screening of “Hidden Figures”, 4 p.m. (doors open 3.30 p.m.), The Lecture Theatre, The Old Palace. Certificate PG. Duration 127 minutes. Tickets £6.00 each. This Oscar nominated film tells the story of three African-American women whose achievements turned around the Space Race. It has been described as 'funny, heart-warming and inspirational.'
