 BY MATTHEW ALBRIGHT | Staff writer It was a tip from a family member, not Baton Rouge police, that led West Baton Rouge Sheriff's deputies to discover that a BRPD helicopter had crashed, killing two officers on Sunday, the sheriff's office said yesterday. That raises a burning question: Why did it take hours to realize the crash had happened? Among other new information we gathered yesterday about the crash: - BRPD identified the officers who died as Sgt. David Poirrier and Cpl. Scotty Canezaro.
- The FAA said the crash happened when the tail rotor hit a tree.
- The air traffic control tower at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport, where the helicopter took off, was likely unmanned at the time of the crash.
