New revalations in deadly BRPD helicopter crash

BY MATTHEW ALBRIGHT | Staff writer

It was a tip from a family member, not Baton Rouge police, that led West Baton Rouge Sheriff's deputies to discover that a BRPD helicopter had crashed, killing two officers on Sunday, the sheriff's office said yesterday.

That raises a burning question: Why did it take hours to realize the crash had happened?

Among other new information we gathered yesterday about the crash:

  • BRPD identified the officers who died as Sgt. David Poirrier and Cpl. Scotty Canezaro.
  • The FAA said the crash happened when the tail rotor hit a tree.
  • The air traffic control tower at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport, where the helicopter took off, was likely unmanned at the time of the crash.

We'll be continuing to follow this story for more information.

The Youngsville police chief and a city council member are under scrutiny after the chief personally arrived at the scene of a crash the council member caused — and she left without a sobriety test or citation.

Here's the proof from body camera footage that shows, among other things, the chief singing along with the council member.

The LSU women's basketball team has arrived. Just two years after Coach Kim Mulkey took over, the Tigers are in the Final Four.

Here's Scott Rabalais' take on just how impressive an achievement that is for the team.
