LED streetlight trial in Atwell and Spearwood
With funding support from the Australian Government, the City and Western Power are undertaking a LED streetlight trial in selected sections of Atwell and Spearwood. The new lights will: - Reduce carbon emissions by approximately 50 per cent
- Reduce electricity costs
- Reduce maintenance costs as LED lighting lasts longer.
The trial forms part of the City's new Climate Change Strategy and will conclude in March 2021. After resident feedback is sought towards the end of the trial, the City hopes to replace Cockburn's 14,000 streetlights with LED lighting. |

New sports & community centre for Hammond Park
Hammond Park locals will soon have a brand new sports and community facility to enjoy. The Frankland Park Sports and Community Facility will be located on the corner of Wattleup Road and Frankland Avenue. The $1.5 million facility – funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, will feature: - Multi-purpose community sporting facility
- Activity and function room (with a commercial-grade kitchen) for hire
- Clubroom
- Four changerooms and storage
- 150 car parking bays
- Two AFL size sporting ovals
- LED floodlighting and a seated retaining wall.
Construction will begin in February 2021 and should be completed by late 2021. |

A day in the life of a CoSafe Officer
You would have seen our friendly CoSafe Officers out and about in the community, but what do they do? Below is a snapshot of a few jobs one of our officers attended over a day.
Getting home safe
After receiving reports of an intoxicated male at a local bar, our CoSafe Officer arrived to find him quite incoherent and confused. It took over an hour for the officer to locate the man’s house and accompany him home. Recalling the incident, the officer said, “I knew he was someone’s husband, brother or father. I just wanted him home safe and sound, no matter how long it took”.
Broken down? We’re here to help
Out on his regular patrols, our CoSafe Officer noticed an elderly woman broken down at a busy intersection in Beeliar. With traffic piling up it was paramount that the situation was solved as soon as possible. Pulling over, our officer provided traffic management to clear the area of traffic and moved the car onto a central island with the assistance of other members of the public. While comforting the driver, he contacted a towing company and stayed with the lady until they arrived.
Case of the missing quad
Quads aren’t made for suburban streets - they create a significant safety hazard to road users and pedestrians alike. A member of the public didn’t get this memo and the quad they were riding was confiscated. After running the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), it was found to be reported stolen seven years ago. |

Road closures on Mayor and Hamilton Roads, Coogee
Various road closures will be in place on Mayor Road between Rockingham Road and Hamilton Road in Coogee throughout December 2020 and January 2021. The Water Corporation is replacing the underground water pipes to future-proof water supply in the area. The closures will progress in stages, with road users encouraged to plan ahead. Proposed new bus route - what do you think?
If you live in Atwell, Banjup, Cockburn Central, Jandakot, Treeby or Success, have your say on Transperth's proposed new bus service (route 523) which would operate between Cockburn Central Station and Treeby. This new service would expand the Transperth network to Treeby for the first time. Route 523 is proposed to operate seven days a week every 15 minutes during weekday peak periods, and every 60 minutes during off-peak weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Services would be timed to formally connect with trains at Cockburn Central Station. |

Our 10-year plan for waste Our new Waste Strategy 2020-30 outlines how the City can manage the long term sustainability of its waste practices, with the objectives: - Avoid – generate less waste
- Recover – recover more value and resources from the waste we produce
- Protect – protect the environment by managing waste responsibly.
Increasing the resource recovery rate from 8% to 70% A focus of the plan is to transform the Henderson Waste Recovery Park (HWRP) into a Resource Recovery Precinct for the sustainable long-term management of waste. This future precinct could increase the current 8 per cent resource recovery rate to 70 per cent. It could also lease sites for complimentary waste businesses to assist reprocessing and reuse of recovered materials like steel, green waste, timber, cardboard, mattresses and electronic waste. Existing landfill space would be filled in and the landfill cells capped as there is no plan to build new landfill cells beyond the cells’ predicted 2038 capacity. Renewable energy infrastructure such as multiple solar panels and wind turbines are proposed. These may in turn provide an inexpensive power source for the generation of renewable hydrogen for refuelling the City’s waste collection and light vehicle fleets. Moving around the City - what's planned? The aim of the City's new 10-year Integrated Transport Strategy is to facilitate safe, efficient and sustainable movement around the City, managing traffic congestion, advocating for improved public transport and supporting alternative means of transport. The plan aims to: - Improve regional connectivity while protecting local needs
- developing east-west links, enhancing existing north-south corridors and planning high/wide load corridors
- Implement green infrastructure
- preserving and enhancing roadside vegetation
- Transition to sustainable transport modes
- improved walking and cycling infrastructure
- Improving public transport access
- pursuing a future rapid public transport corridor connecting Cockburn and Fremantle
- Plan transport networks to support where people live and work
- interfacing transport links with Activity Centre plans
- Continue to enable the best outcomes for Cockburn Central and Aubin Grove train stations
- support density and transit-oriented development outcomes.

| What's planned for the Coogee Beach foreshore?
Parts of the Coogee Beach foreshore are identified as increasingly vulnerable to coastal hazards and may come under pressure in the future. The Coogee Beach Foreshore Management Plan is a 50-year guide on how we will adapt to coastal challenges to maintain the environmental, recreational, social and commercial values of the foreshore.
The plan recommends ongoing planning to maintain the foreshore in its current state, with the overall goal of preserving the: - Sandy beach, dune vegetation and bush
- Paths, car parks, playgrounds, and toilets
- Holiday park, surf club and café.

Trade your litter for a FREE drink or icecream
The Clean Ocean Cuppas program is back, rewarding people who collect a bucket of litter from the beach with a FREE coffee, soft drink or ice cream from one of six participating local cafes. Running through to March 2021, the program is designed to reduce rubbish along our coast, and reward locals.
