NCMEC is thrilled to launch the new and improved SafeToCompete program. With the SuperBowl and Olympics fresh on everyone’s minds, it’s important to remember that sports should be safe places for children to grow both as people and athletes. Unfortunately, child sexual abuse in sports has gained national attention in recent years with cases of sports teams and institutions failing to prioritize child safety with heartbreaking consequences.
But child sexual abuse in sport IS preventable and there are many things that can done to protect athletes! That’s why the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has partnered with It’s A Penalty to revive and reinvent NCMEC’s SafeToCompete program! This new and improved (but still free) program now includes: An interactive 30-minute training course for coaches A brief 15-minute parent education module Discussion guides on boundary setting and safety for kids ages 5-11 and 12-17 Information on child sex trafficking Resources for coaches, such as “The Goal: Ending Sex Trafficking” This program will equip coaches and parents with the tools needed to create a safe environment in sport where boundary violations of any sort are not tolerated, and child safety and respect are top priorities.
