OUR MISSION NEW RELEASES EVENTS

The days are getting longer, the weather warmer, and we're getting closer to releasing our first two books of the Spring 2016 season!  Two exciting Level 1 titles are hitting the shelves in April: Birdsong: A Story in Pictures, a wordless book from master cartoonist James Sturm that encourages readers to "read between the lines" of images; and The Real Poop on Pigeons!, the second entry in Kevin McCloskey's fun-science catalog.

Event season is also picking up, with a jam-packed schedule so that everyone can get a taste of TOON!

NEW!

Birdsong: A Story in Pictures by James SturmApril 5, 2016TOON Level 1 (Grades K-1)

Discover Kamishibai, the art of Japanese paper theater!

An innocent bird meets two cruel kids and changes their world forever-–but exactly how this unfolds is up to you since the story is wordless. It is meant to be narrated by each reader in his or her own way. The spare and elegant images by master cartoonist James Sturm are the visual equivalent of haikus--they leave space for children to inhabit this timeless tale–and make it their own.

Living in our media-rich environment, making meaning out of reading both words and visuals is more critical now than ever.  Kamishibai encourages visual literacy through prompting children to "read between the lines" of images on their own.  The world of visual storytelling is rich and varied, of which Kamishibai is a glowing (and particularly fun!) tradition. Birdsong: A Story in Pictures includes an appendix about the history of this unique art form and further resources.

With his trademark mix of humor, well-researched facts, and artistry, Kevin McCloskey delivers the straight poop on these humble creatures, which turn out to be...coo, coo, COOL!
