New study: Antibiotics still prescribed at ’alarming rates’ in outpatient settings

A new study published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, the journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), has concluded that antibiotics continue to be prescribed at "alarming rates" in outpatient settings. Researchers found this increase in prescriptions occurred even though there has been a recent push to limit use of these drugs due to antibiotic resistance.

The rule — tentatively called NFPA 3000, Standard for Preparedness and Response to Active Shooter and/or Hostile Events — is being hashed out at NFPA headquarters in Quincy, Massachusetts, and was expected to be completed in draft form by early 2018.

California hospital deploys surge tent to handle sudden influx of flu patients

A sudden spike in flu-like cases in December prompted one California hospital to break out its surge tent as patients filled its ER. You should review supplies needed to treat potential influenza patients and ensure your patient-flow tracking can extend to use of a surge tent in the event flu-ridden patients threaten to overwhelm your ED.
