As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to ensue and the healthcare community prepares for the next infection wave, there’s always the lingering potential that other pathogens may emerge and result with widespread, inter-facility transmission and threaten the health of the patients, residents, and staff. There are numerous contributing factors that may result in an outbreak, including the lack of hand hygiene, breakdowns with aseptic technique, improper donning and doffing personal protective equipment, inadequate environmental hygiene, vaccine declination, and drug diversion. This free presentation will discuss acute care, long-term care, and behavioral health outbreaks. Pathogen etiology, transmission, management, preventative strategies, and lessons learned will be reviewed. Learning Objectives Identify two evidence-based practices to prevent outbreaks. Describe one clinical intervention to halt an outbreak. |
