Good afternoon. First, we’re pleased to present our summer guide to museum exhibitions and other long-running noncommercial shows to see around the city. Highlights include surveys, such as those of Amy Sherald, Jack Whitten, and Consuelo Kanaga, and shows that offer a way into the lesser-known practices of well-known artists like Lorna Simpson, Beauford Delaney, Hilma af Klint, and John Singer Sargent. But don’t miss others distinctly rooted in the city’s culture, like one at the Bronx Museum dedicated to South Bronx community-building, and another at the Queens Museum that draws from the visual vernacular of Jackson Heights phone repair shops. Which is all to say, there’s a lot going on.
Such as, for instance, Juneteenth! Tons of museums are hosting events to observe the holiday, including the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and the Museum of Moving Image in Astoria. Celebration is in the air — or maybe that’s love, or maybe those are in some ways the same. Read below for our Pride Month piece on the Leslie-Lohman Museum, the world’s first LGBTQ+ art museum. And Vermeer’s Love Letters, an exhibition at the Frick of three of the Dutch master’s paintings, goes on view tomorrow. It’s an invitation to fall in love again — with the painter, with the city. — Lisa Yin Zhang, Associate Editor | |

| EXHIBITION REVIEW | | | Ali Banisadr: The Alchemist at the Katonah Museum of Art | “[The figures] contend against the centrifugal force of a world that, perhaps like ours, spins at over 1,000 miles per hour, and they struggle for their own motion, for agency in a realm that would be unbothered to leave them behind.” |
