Thank you, first of all, for coming to our 15th birthday party last week, or if not, then simply reading these words — we love and appreciate our community so dearly. Also, special thanks to emcee Zac Thompson, who wove a sharp and sweet narrative about Hyperallergic’s journey in which aerialist CoCo the Pup spun a doggishly devilish performance, drag artist Kanika put Trump in the Mean Girls Burn Book, and Junior Mintt gave us goosebumps with a lipsync of Raquel Willis’s speech for Black trans power. And thank you to so many others — performers, planners, caterers, bartenders, partygoers — for making a Wednesday night unforgettable. Yesterday was Indigenous Peoples’ Day — of all holidays, that should remind you of the layered history of what was once called Manahatta. On that note, Aaron Short guides us through Open House New York, which explores the built history of our city, kicking off this Friday with a party at the Dumbo Archway Plaza — New York’s “newest and oldest,” apparently. In reviews, Rebecca Schiffman explores Alvin Ailey’s living history of movement, while Eileen Isagon Skyers calls attention to the ways that Christian Marclay, in cleaving language and technology from context, suspends us in a timeless present. I’ll leave you with Hrag Vartanian’s conversation with Stefan Sagmeister, that rangy artist-slash-graphic designer-slash-Emmy winner. The accolades impress me, but it’s the fact that he’s an optimist, despite it all, that inspires me most. — Lisa Yin Zhang, Associate Editor | |

FROM OUR CRITICS | | | Edges of Ailey at the Whitney Museum of American Art | “[Ailey’s] expansive vision of what modern dance could be — flexible, inclusive, and multidisciplinary — makes his work an ideal centerpiece for the Whitney’s first-ever exhibition dedicated to a performing artist.” |
|
| | | Christian Marclay: Subtitled at Paula Cooper Gallery | “[Marclay’s] work suspends us in the flow of time — whether in print, collage, or onscreen — calling attention to the scattered technologies that have defined so many frames of life, language, and experience.” |
