The wine world is descending on New York City’s Marriott Marquis Times Square this weekend to celebrate Wine Spectator’s New York Wine Experience. Featuring the Grand Tastings, which include more than 250 of the world’s greatest wines—all rated 90 points or above by Wine Spectator’s editors—the Wine Experience marries consumer enthusiasm for the globe’s most prestigious bottles with a vibrant, bustling trade presence comprised of the industry’s top players. SND caught up with a number of key industry executives attending the event to discuss their activities at the Wine Experience. Here’s what they had to say:
Stephen Brauer, president and CEO, Pasternak Wine Imports
“Eric Kohler is attending the New York Wine Experience for the very first time as the newly appointed winemaker at Château Lafite Rothschild. On Saturday he will accompany Baron Eric de Rothschild to lead a vertical tasting of six vintages celebrating four decades from one of Bordeaux’s most famous first-growth châteaux.”
Marc Taub, president and CEO, Palm Bay International
“Recanati is one of four Israeli wineries featured at this year’s Wine Experience (along with Castel, Tabor and Tzora), underscoring Israel’s arrival on the world stage as a dynamic wine region. We’re especially excited about what chief winemaker Gil Shatsberg is doing with Mediterranean varieties, such as the Wild Carignan he and Lenny Recanati are pouring at the Grand Tastings.”
Michael Quinttus, president and CEO, Vintus
“Vintus is proud to have eight of the 29 producers in its portfolio pouring at this year’s Wine Experience. E. Guigal’s Philippe Guigal is leading a “Wine Star” seminar with his Côte-Rôtie La Turque 2011. Also at the seminar, Champagne Bollinger’s Guy de Rivoire is featuring the Bollinger R.D. 2002, and Quinta do Noval’s Christian Seely is presenting Quinta do Noval Nacional 2001 vintage Port. In news beyond the Wine Experience, we’ve recently added Ponzi Vineyards and the historic Loire Valley estate Langlois-Chateau—a leader in Sancerre and Crémant de Loire.”
Bill Terlato, president and CEO, Terlato Wine Group
“We’re proud to have 15 wineries from the Terlato portfolio at the New York Wine Experience. Piper-Heidsieck Chef du Cave Regis Camus is pouring Piper-Heidsieck 2006 Vintage. Piper Heidsieck’s newest offering is Rare Rosé 2007, launching right now—it just received 95 points from Wine Spectator.”
Jean-Guillaume Prats, president, Estates & Wines, Moët Hennessy
“From Spain, for many years we have poured Numanthia from Bodega Numanthia in Toro; however, since so many Wine Experience participants already know this wine, for the first time ever we’re offering our Termanthia, sourced from ungrafted, 120 year-old vineyards.”
Roger Nabedian, senior vice president and general manager, Premium Business Unit, E.&J. Gallo
“Our LUX Wines division focuses on Italian wines—including Allegrini and Renato Ratti, both of whom are pouring at the Wine Experience. In the coming years, we’re looking to expand outside of Italy and add other iconic, terroir-driven wineries to the LUX portfolio. We also have representation this year from the newest addition to the E.&J. Gallo portfolio, Orin Swift. In pouring Orin Swift Machete, I believe Dave Phinney may be the only New World winemaker, or at least the only California winemaker, to feature a Grenache/Syrah/Petite Sirah blend during the New York Wine Experience.”
Ted Baseler, president and CEO, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates
“We’re proud to show outstanding wines from a collection of our brightest pearls, including a trio of the world’s great Cabernets, Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Ethos, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ CASK 23, and Antinori’s Solaia; two very distinctive Pinot Noirs, Patz & Hall’s Hyde Vineyard and Miguel Torres’ Escaleras de Empedrado; and a one-of-a-kind blend including ancestral Catalan varieties, Torres’ Grans Muralles. We’ll be celebrating a very important milestone in 2017—the 50th anniversary of Chateau Ste. Michelle, and we’re undertaking a major expansion of our flagship winery.”
Barry Sheridan, senior vice president, marketing, Americas, Treasury Wine Estates
“Treasury Wine Estates is present with a number of wines, including the great Penfolds Bin 707, as well as Beringer Private Reserve, Chateau St. Jean Alexander Valley. Mark Beringer, great-great grandson of Jacob Beringer and Beringer’s current winemaker, is present, and we hosted the global launch of the Penfolds Collection, including the unveiling of the 2013 Grange, on Thursday night. We’ll also be hosting seminars, as well recorking clinics in four cities across the U.S.: New York City, Miami, Vancouver and Los Angeles.”
Rocco Lombardo, president, Wilson Daniels
“With the 40th anniversary of the Wine Spectator, Wilson Daniels is honored to have 11 wineries participating at the New York Wine Experience. Today, Wilson Daniels remains steadfast on the West Coast and in Western Europe. The recent additions of Arnaldo Caprai, Arista, Bisol, Champagne Gosset, Dal Forno Romano and Chateau Gassier have reinforced the mission.”
Martin Sinkoff, vice president, director of marketing, Frederick Wildman & Sons
“We’re thrilled that so many wines in the Wildman portfolio were selected to participate in this year’s New York Wine Experience. Our superstar producers from Piedmont (Marchesi di Barolo); Burgundy (Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils, Olivier Leflaive Freres, Chateau Fuisse and Domaine Faiveley); Basilicata (Re Manfredi) (first time!); Alsace (Famille Hugel); Napa (Heitz, Bond, Harlan and Chappellet); Santa Cruz Mountains (Ridge); and Willamette, Oregon (Bethel Heights) have all selected unique, iconic wines to represent their estates and families.”
Caroline Shaw, executive vice president, Jackson Family Wines
“Our Hartford winery is showcasing its 2013 Hartford Court Three Jacks Chardonnay at the Grand Tastings, from a small vineyard in the heart of the Green Valley of the Russian River Valley AVA. Also from from our portflio, Siduri winemaker Adam Lee is pouring the 2014 Siduri Rosella’s Vineyard Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA.”
Gérard Bertrand, CEO of Gérard Bertrand
“At this year’s Grand Tastings, we’re pouring our Gerard Bertrand Corbieres Boutenac La Forge 2013, made from Syrah and Carignan. We’ll also soon be releasing an exquisite century box collection of the Gerard Bertrand line of Legend Vintage fortified sweet wines from the South of France. All 18 Legend Vintages, spanning from 1875 to 1974, will be tucked within 18 concealed drawers in the wooden box. It’s a limited release with only 10 cases for the world.”
Giovanni Geddes da Filicaja, CEO, Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi – Ornellaia e Masseto
“The New York Wine Experience is undoubtedly the most interesting consumer event in the world. It’s the only event that truly presents only fine wines. Since my first year of attendance in 1985, the Wine Experience has become a meeting point for key people in the wine world. Next year, we’ll be launching Ornellaia’s 2014 vintage at the New Whitney Museum to celebrate the ninth anniversary of Vendemmia d’Artista.”
