New York March 25, 2020 Letter from the editor: Headlines have been dire lately, so I write to you with a smidgen of good news: today, the Met lent its support to a request by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), calling for Congress “to direct $4 billion in federal funds to help buoy nonprofit museums during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Fingers and toes crossed that the Met’s decision, like its decision to close its doors earlier this month to slow the spread of COVID-19, encourages other museums to follow suit. Our news editor Jasmine Weber shares the full story about the #CongressSaveCulture campaign. A viral petition circulated by New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) has similarly been making waves for its focus on pushing NYC to extend its COVID-19 relief programs to small and mid-size galleries. As NADA explains, “If no action is taken, these businesses will not survive and many artists and art workers will be left without a system of support.” Our staff writer Hakim Bishara shares the full story here. On the note of organizing, this week I also had the pleasure of speaking with curator Ashley James, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, for the first installment of our new interview series “Meet the NYC Art Community.” Among the myriad topics we discussed, James highlighted the importance of “supporting each other both in this short and long term.” Read the full interview here. Businesses with one to four employees can apply for the Employee Retention Grant Program, including galleries and nonprofits. Thousands have signed the museum’s petition asking Congress to dedicate part of its potential $2 trillion stimulus package to museums. Part-time and freelance cultural workers are asking themselves the same question: will we be paid?
