International air race: Local organisers are confident Lake Macquarie will feature in the Air Race Series in the future after COVID and the global economic situation forced the cancellation of the 2022 event. The Air Race Series was to be held in November over Lake Macquarie featuring the world's best pilots, including local flyer Matt Hall.
Singleton Council 2.0: Voters in the Singleton LGA were sent back to the polls after the online voting system iVote failed at the December election last year. It didn't affect the mayoral vote but candidates had to vie for nine councillor positions again. With preferences and postal votes counted, Labor's Sarah Johnstone replaces Independent Belinda Charlton in the only change made by voters.
Orica emissions expected to improve: Chemical giant Orica is moving ahead with plans to almost halve greenhouse gas emissions at its Newcastle ammonium nitrate plant, with the arrival of new technology. It's spending $37 million on catalyst abatement reactors, with the first of three being installed at its Kooragang Island site this week. It turns nitrous oxide, generated from the manufacturing process, into nitrogen and water.
Clarity needed on mobility scooter rules: A Newcastle magistrate due to sentence a drunk mobility scooter rider says confusion surrounds road rules for wheeled modes of transport, other than standard vehicles.
Lifeline for Hunter koalas: The Port Stephens Koala Hospital has welcomed federal government funding of $3 million to support an assisted breeding and bio-bank project to help ensure the survival of the species. A collaboration between the hospital, the University of Newcastle and the Taronga Conservation Society will spend about $14 million during the next five years.
Hunter Gas Pipeline: State Upper Hunter MP Dave Layzell says he hopes there'll be better consultation with farmers from the new proponent of the Hunter Gas Pipeline. Energy giant Santos last week finalised a purchase of the company that was planning to pipe gas from the Narrabri gas project to the east coast market. Mr Layzell says there's been some bad blood with landholders so far, but believes Santos has the resources to communicate better.
Broke sinkholes: Singleton Council says it hopes to have scores of sinkholes that opened during severe flooding at Broke fixed by next week. The sinkholes appeared last month around people's homes during the worst flooding seen in the area for 70 years. Council has filled about 70 with ballast so far.
