FBI has been examining a violent fight between acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan and his wife in 2010; accounts differ on aggressor

The incident, in which each told police they had been hit by the other, could complicate the Trump administration’s effort to install Shanahan, now the acting defense secretary, as head of the military at a time when it is struggling to combat domestic abuse in the ranks. The FBI is looking at the case as part of its background check ahead of a possible confirmation hearing.
