Dear Supporter, I’m writing to you from Cox’s Bazar District in Bangladesh, where I work as UNHCR’s Senior Public Information Officer for the Rohingya emergency.
UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Cate Blanchett joined me in the Rohingya camps this week. Cate met with families and saw firsthand the desperate situation they face as the monsoon begins
With heavy rains due to start in a matter of weeks, more than 150,000 refugees are at risk of landslides and floods, in what could become a disaster on top of the current emergency.
Speaking at the end of her visit, Cate said: “The Rohingya refugees have already experienced targeted violence, human rights abuses and horrific journeys. But now, as the monsoon season approaches, [we] are in a race against time to ensure the refugees are as safe as they can be to deal with potential floods and landslides. I cannot stress how much more help is needed for these vulnerable stateless refugees, the majority of whom are women and children.” Supporter, we are racing to prevent a disaster within a disaster. Please donate to help Rohingya families now.
One of the refugees Cate met was Jhura, a 28-year-old mother of two who became separated from her husband as they fled. She fears he has been killed. Jhura’s bamboo shelter is too flimsy to withstand monsoon conditions and the huge makeshift camp she lives in doesn’t have basic infrastructure such as wells or toilets. As well as the risk of fatal landslides, polluted water could lead to outbreaks of waterborne diseases like cholera unless we act now. We urgently need your help. Please donate today to provide shelter kits, clean water, sanitation to Rohingya families at imminent risk of disease or death. You can learn more about the emergency by watching an interview with Cate Blanchett on ABC TV’s ‘The World’ at 10pm AEDT tonight. Supporter, given the extreme urgency of this situation, please give generously to help UNHCR protect Rohingya families during monsoon season |
