MARCH IN THE LIBRARY
This year’s Manchester Reads will focus on the environment, sustainability, and answering the call to embrace and defend the natural world. During the month of March, the library will provide books and events that center around these important themes. The adult’s non-fiction book will be The Outdoor Citizen: Get Out, Give Back, Get Active by local Manchester resident John Judge. For kids we have the books Wishtree by Katherine Applegate and Can You Hear the Trees Talking? by Peter Wohllenben. And for young adults we have Dry by Shusterman and No One is Too Small to Make a Difference by Greata Thunberg. Copies of these books are available to borrow from the library. 
Drop-In Knitting Sessions Continue! Drop-in knitting sessions will continue being held on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30-3:30 PM. Please join us at the Roundtable and bring your old or new project! We welcome beginners and experienced crafters, all ages. Assistance is sometimes available, many of our knitters have much more experience than we do and are quite helpful! If you have any questions, or would like to participate or assist, please call perennial knitter beginner, Sara Collins, Library Director, 978-526-2011. 
Device Advice/Tech Help The Adult Services Librarian Rachael Meneades will be offering device advice and tech help on Thursday afternoons between 3-5 PM. Drop in or set up a reservation by contacting Rachael at rmeneades@manchesterpl.org. Bring your own device and your own questions, or just stop in to see what you can use in the library! 
Hearthside Book Group The Hearthside Book Group will meet next on Tuesday, March 3rd at 4:00 PM. The group will discuss Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover. New members are always welcome.
Manchester Reads - Local Author Book Talk: John Judge’s The Outdoor Citizen: Get Out, Give Back, Get Active On Thursday, March 5th at 6:30 PM local resident John Judge will be visiting the library to discuss his book The Outdoor Citizen: Get Out, Give Back, Get Active. His book details the importance of reconnecting with nature and how to live an active and sustainable outdoor lifestyle. John is the president and chief executive officer of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) and an international leader in conservation stewardship. 
Come Write In with Crystal Condakes Karlberg Calling all writers and anyone who wants to write. The Manchester Public Library will be hosting a writing session on Monday, March 9th and Wednesday, March 25th from 6 PM – 7:30 PM for anyone who would like a space to work on their writing. Whether you are a beginning writer or you are already working on a project, this will be a great opportunity. In one area of the library, we will offer a writing group format complete with prompts and light critique for anyone who wants it. Other areas of the library will be available for those who just need a time and place to get their ideas down. Directing the workshops will be Manchester resident Crystal Condakes Karlberg. She has been participating and leading writing workshops for 20+ years. Her poetry has recently been published by Oddball Magazine, Mom Egg Review, and Soundings East. She was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2018. 
Manchester Reads - The Science of Sunshine On Thursday, March 12th at 6 PM Northern Essex Community College Associate Professor Mike Cross will discuss what are “healthy” doses of time in the sun and the benefits of more sun exposure. Mike Cross is department chair of Natural Sciences at NECC where he teaches chemistry and forensic science. 
March Movie Night On Friday, March 13th at 5:30 PM the library will be showing a movie based on the real life battle between two popular motor companies to build a superior race car. This movie stars Matt Damon, Christian Bale, and Caitriona Balfe. Bring your own drink, the Library will provide popcorn. 
Manchester Reads - Cape Ann Vernal Pond presents Critters at the Library Sunday, March 15th @ 2PM Families are invited to get acquainted with some of the creatures that will help us welcome springtime. Rick Roth of the Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team will introduce animals from our local area that you may have never seen up close. After the presentation, there will be an optional walk to an easily accessible vernal pond in our own Powder House Hill Reservation which will soon come alive with the sounds of spring! This event is co-sponsored by the Hooper Fund, the Manchester Public Library, the Manchester Essex Conservation Trust and Manchester’s Open Space and Recreation Committee
Nonfiction Book Group The next meeting of the Nonfiction Book Group is Wednesday, March 18th at 6:30 PM. The group will discuss the Outdoor Citizen: Get Out, Give Back, Get Active. New members are always welcome. 
Seed Savers: Swaps and Garden Talk Join us as we casually share our gardening experiences, plans, and make seeds available for each other to share and take home. The library has several quantities that have been donated or selected for this annual event and we welcome your participation! Gardeners of all ages are invited to join us at 6:30 PM Wednesday March 25th at the Manchester by the Sea Public Library. Contact scollins@manchesterpl.org with any questions or if you know you will be bringing some seeds or seedlings to share. Otherwise, see you in the library and let’s talk plants! 
Manchester Reads - Elders Climate Action - A Climate Change Conversation On Thursday, March 26th at 6 PM, meet with members of the Elders Climate Action group to discuss a general overview of climate change followed by an information session on state and community level emissions, challenges, and possible solutions. Presenters Arnold Epstein and Paul Reisberg are members of the Elders Climate Action, an organization of volunteers who came together throughout the United States to address climate change. 
Mystery Book Group The Mystery Book Group will meet Friday, March 27th at 10:30 AM to discuss The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. New members are always welcome.
