JUNE LIBRARY NEWS
Outdoor Wi-Fi Access Updated As the days grow longer and warmer, stop by the Manchester Library and settle in on the front lawn’s comfortable outdoor chairs or by the teak table generously sponsored by The Friends of the Library where you can enjoy the library’s updated and extended Wi-Fi signal! The wireless access is now available to reach every spot of the front and side of the library. With no password necessary, the next time you visit for a picnic, or a quiet reading space, or a relaxing outdoor gathering spot with friends, you can also access your favorite videos, send emails, or search the internet from the comfort of a shady or sunny spot on the front lawn!
Updated Library Browsing Hours in June Starting in June, the Manchester library has once again updated the hours patrons may come into the building to enjoy library services. While Curbside Pickup hours will continue Monday to Saturday, in addition from 11 AM -5 PM on Monday to Friday,11 AM – 7 PM on Thursdays, and 11 AM – 3 PM on Saturdays, patrons may come into the library without making a reservation. Access to a computer will require an appointment. Please call 978-526-7711. We ask that if you cannot make your appointed time to please call to cancel so others will have a chance to enjoy this service. We also ask that patrons continue to wear a mask, sanitize their hands and be aware of remaining socially distant while inside the building.
The Manchester Library is excited to announce that new birdwatching kits are now available to borrow! These kits were generously funded by the Friends of the Manchester Public Library. Birdwatching is a fun hobby for all ages, and these kits are made for adults and youths that can be checked out for one week. Inside each kit comes with a fun, lightweight bag holding binoculars and birding guides that help provide easy ways to identify North America birds. You can place a hold on a kit to borrow for seven days by going online to the library’s website at manchesterpl.org or call the library at 978-526-7711. Kits can be picked up during library Curbside Pickup hours. Dont't Forget! New Outdoor Games to Borrow! You can choose from a Bean bag game, a Bocce ball game, and a Wooden blocks game! Library Events Online Hearthside Book Group Tuesday, June 1st at 4:00 PM Join us on Zoom to discuss The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline. Contact Lori Dumont at ldumont@manchesterpl.org to register for this book group meeting. Copies of this book are available at the circulation desk, and you can use the library's curbside pickup or home delivery service to get a copy. Adult Online Tai Chi Class with Susan Halpern now Outdoors! On Thursday, June 3rd at 10 AM Manchester local Susan Halpern will be moving her weekly series of Tai Chi class for ages 18 and older to the front of the library lawn! To register for this event please email Adult Services Librarian Rachel Meneades at remeneades@manchesterpl.org and fill out the Safety Release Registration Form. Please wear loose clothing, sneakers or any other low heeled, non-slip shoes, and practice in a space about 6-8 square feet. Also, please keep a chair for resting as needed nearby. Tai Chi is an ancient form of exercise, some forms created 300 years ago. The class will focus on the Sun style which employs a more upright stance with small arm movements and short steps. Forms demand attention and stimulate good balance, attention, and stress reduction. Anyone can benefit from Tai Chi. Studies have found that regular Tai Chi practice reduces the incidence of falls. While group practice is how many have been exposed to Tai Chi, a home practice provides many benefits and will prepare everyone for meetings outside when this pandemic is in control. Your instructor, Susan Halpern has been trained and certified to teach by the Tai Chi for Health Institute and has been teaching at North Shore Medical Center outpatient clinic for 12 years. Online Cooking Class with Simply Creative’s Rob Scott: Blueberry Cinnamon Strusel On Friday, June 4th at 7 PM The Manchester Public Library is partnering with Simply Creative's Rob Scott where he will host an online cooking class on putting together an easy and delicious desert you can use all summer long! Join us on Zoom and learn how to make a Blueberry Cream Cheese Cake with a Brown Sugar Cinnamon Streusel. You can also access the recipe ahead of time and follow along with Rob to learn his tips and tricks for putting together this delicious treat! To register for this event Zoom please click HERE. Diversity Matters Book Group On Tuesday, June 8th at 5:00 PM Join us on Zoom and contact Sara Collins at scollins@manchesterpl.org to register for this group. The Diversity Matters group will discuss “Five Days” by Wes Moore and Erica L. Green. We are hoping to continue the exploration, thinking, and conversations of this important issue with more community members. AAA Bike and Safety Presentation On Wednesday, June 9th at 6:30 PM Even though Bike Safety month is in May, you can still join AAA for their online presentation! Biking enthusiasts and families can learn about the importance of wearing protective gear, staying visible when biking outside, how to use hand signals, and where to find safe places to ride and walk! The Cooking Gene: Tracing my African American Story Through Food with Michael Twitty On Thursday, June 10th at 7 PM The Manchester Library has partnered with the Groton Public library and 23 other public libraries to host African American culinary historian and James Beard Award winner Michael W. Twitty for an online presentation where Michael will discuss his award winning book The Cooking Gene and his journey to trace his family history through the story of Southern and American food. Using genetic research, historic interpretation, nature study, heirloom gardening and interviews with contemporary voices in food, his journey led him back to his family’s origins in West and Central Africa and a front ring seat in the debate over race and food in American life. AAA Real ID Program On Thursday, June 17th at 6:30 PM AAA will have an online presentation on the Massachusetts Identification Requirements for obtaining a REAL ID, a federal identification form that will eventually be required for air travel and entering federal buildings. AAA will help you understand the application process and find out what you need, including required documents, how to obtain the ID, and you can do to save time and be successful in one trip when you apply. Ancestry Library is a version of Ancestry.com that is now temporarily available for free at home. This resource contains a variety of collections that can help in educational or genealogical research. These historical records include a network of resources you can search, such as census, church, court, and immigration records. Ancestry Library will guide your research from the beginning and provide downloadable forms that can help organize the content you collect.
A Boston Public Library eCard is a virtual library card that allows Massachusetts residents to instantly use all of Boston Public Library's online resources. You can read magazine and journal articles from online databases, download eBooks, Audio, Video and downloadable media. Don't have an eCard? Register for one online.
A nonprofit organization, Consumer Reports provides an easy to use guide for unbiased ratings on thousands of products and services used in everyday life. Included in the subscription are helpful tools for cars and televisions, satisfaction scores from nearly a million consumers, and expert tips on topics including health, food, tech and money. When accessing Consumer Reports from home you will need your library card’s barcode numbers. If you do not have access to your library card, please see a librarian at the Manchester Library.
Creativebug is a go-to digital resource that offers over a 1,000 high-quality online videos in arts and crafts instructional workshops and techniques. Learn how to paint, knit, crochet, sew, screen print, make jewelry and more! No matter what level maker you are, you can find a crafting medium that fuels your creative side! When accessing Creativebug from home you will need your library card’s barcode numbers. If you do not have access to your library card, please contact a librarian at the Manchester Library at 978-526-7711. Freegal is a downloadable music service from your library. All you need is your Manchester Library card number and your PIN. With access to the Sony Music Entertainment catalog, it offers hundreds of thousands of songs, over 100 genres of music, and more than 50 record labels, all without having to download software or have any digital rights management (DRM) issues to deal with. Access to Freegal is limited to patrons of the Manchester Public Library.
Hoopla, the Library’s newest downloading service, will offer you a ton of fun and new content to enjoy! Using a web browser, smart phone or tablet, hoopla is an online streaming service that offers a great selection of feature films, television shows, documentaries, music albums and audiobooks you can enjoy at home or on the go. The content is always available so you don’t have to worry about ending up on any wait-lists and you get up to 10 checkouts per month! Check out Hoopla’s newest addition: Bonus Borrows! In order to provide relief to Libraries and to provide more content to Patrons during this difficult time of sheltering at home, we are proud to announce the hoopla Bonus Borrows Collection with more than 1,000 top titles and hoopla favorites. Each borrow from our free borrows collection is completely FREE to Libraries. Each patron will be debited zero borrows from their monthly hoopla borrows when they borrow something from the collection.
Kanopy is a video streaming service that provides instant access to thousands of critically acclaimed movies, documentaries and Kids favorites. We partner with studios like A24, The Criterion Collection, PBS and more to bring your library access to thoughtful entertainment. How can I watch Kanopy? You can stream Kanopy on any of your favorite devices! Kanopy is accessible via mobile and tablet apps for iPhone and Android. You can also access Kanopy on your Desktop, and SmartTV apps like Roku, Apple TV, and Fire Stick.
Lynda.com has now been upgraded to LinkedinLearning! All of the same great content you know from Lynda.com such as learning how to create a website, updating your knowledge of Microsoft Office, and developing business and creative skills that will increase your ability to achieve personal and professional goals will now be available to enjoy on the updated LinkedIn Learning platform. You will continue to be able to watch all the same content, bookmarked courses, and obtain certificates of completion that you had in Lynda.com will appear on your new account as a part of the upgrade. The Manchester-by-the-Sea Public Library is happy to provide access to The Manchester Cricket’s Digital Archive up to 2009. The digitization of the Cricket was funded by an equal collaboration between the Friends of the Manchester Public Library and current owners of The Manchester Cricket Newspaper. Up-to-date physical copies of the 2019 Manchester Cricket papers are also available at the Manchester Library. The Manchester Cricket is an independent, family-owned weekly newspaper that has served the communities of Manchester and Essex since 1888.
