SAFELY TREATING YOUR HOME WITH INSECTICIDES WHEN YOU HAVE PETS From Furry Friends Food Bank In the summer, the sun isn't the only thing that comes out. Many different species of insects and pests make themselves at home in your plants and gardens. If you choose to turn to chemical defense, it's important to do it in a way that is safe for you and your pets.
LET IT DRY! Insecticides have the highest risk for animals while they are still wet and lower risk once dried.
LOCK IT UP! Its best to store products in a locked closet or in a place that your pet cannot get to.
SHIELD YOUR PET! Keep your pet indoors while spraying or applying chemicals outside.
SAVE THE RECEIPT! In the event that your pet ingests or comes into contact with chemicals, it can be helpful to have the physical packaging, receipt, or poison control information. |
| SUMMERTIME FOOD SAFETY From CSFP
Summertime in Maine is here, which means more barbecues, picnics, and outdoor time. It also means higher temperatures, which seriously affects food safety. Statistically, you are more likely to get food poisoning in the summer than you are in any other season. Below are some tips to help keep you safe: CLEAN! Wash your hands and surfaces often. Unwashed hands are the main cause of foodborne illnesses. SEPARATE! Don't cross contaminate. When packing food for an outing, wrap raw meats up and pack them separately and away from ready-to-eat foods. COOK! Cook your food thoroughly. Bring a meat thermometer with you if you're grilling outdoors as food will char on the outside before it's fully cooked. CHILL! Refrigerate promptly. Pack plenty of extra ice packs and cold coolers to store cold, perishable items in before and after consumption. Packing in shallow containers can help cool things down quicker. |
