What's New from the NJBPU?

On April 2, 2024, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities mailed a notification letter regarding the New Jersey Clean Energy Act's Energy and Water Benchmarking Law to the owners or operators of commercial buildings larger than 25,000 square feet. These building owners and operators must track and report energy and water usage every year by using the United States Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager tool. The deadline to report calendar year 2023 usage is July 1, 2024. For this reporting year, there is an automatic 90-day grace period after the July 1 deadline for reporting 2023 usage for all building owners.

A help desk is available to answer questions about the benchmarking program and Portfolio Manager. If you have any additional questions, please visit our benchmarking website to view frequently asked questions, submit a general inquiry or an exemption request, receive instructions for how to report, or obtain training resources and important updates for benchmarking in New Jersey. To submit an inquiry on the help desk website, please select "New Ticket." To respond to a previously submitted ticket or a received email, please email njbpubenchmarking@beam-portal.org or call 888-533-4571.

Let's Get Technical

Cool Tips to Keep Cool with Insulation

How can you stay chill as we gear up for the hottest part of summer? Proper building insulation can improve comfort while lowering your cooling costs.

Heat naturally moves from warmer to cooler areas until temperature equalizes. During warmer seasons, heat transfers from the outside to the inside of a building. Heat can also move indirectly through interior surfaces like ceilings, walls, and floors whenever temperature differentials exist. Improving your building’s insulation acts as a barrier to heat flow, preventing warm air from entering and keeping the inside cool.

Good insulation helps air conditioning systems use less energy to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature all summer long (energy.gov).

Did you know?

The EPA estimates that you can save an average of 15% on cooling costs by

air-sealing buildings and adding insulation. (energystar.gov).
