This year's State of Care

Our annual State of Care report looks at the trends, shares examples of good and outstanding care, and highlights where care needs to improve.

This year has been a turbulent one for health and social care.

In addition to the ongoing problem of gridlocked care highlighted in last years State of Care, the cost-of-living crisis is biting harder for the public, staff, and providers and workforce pressures have escalated. This combination risks leading to unfair care where those who can afford to pay for treatment do so and those who cant face longer waits and reduced access.

Our consultation on fees for assessing integrated care systems

The Health and Care Act 2022 gives us a new responsibility to give a meaningful and independent assessment of care in a local area.

One of our new roles will be to look at whether integrated care systems (ICSs) are meeting the needs of their local populations.
Each ICS is made up of 2 key elements:

We have published a consultation about fees we are proposing to charge integrated care boards for the new assessments.

We are particularly interested in responses from integrated care boards, the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England. The consultation may also be of interest to other stakeholders and professional bodies.
