| 2016 has been a special year! Dear readers, It has been an exciting and eventful year for the DDR Museum. In July, we celebrated our 10th anniversary with partners and friends and some weeks later we opened our new exhibition "Everyday Live in a Plattenbau", in which we show an authentic DDR apartment. Because of the enlargement, we are now offerering our visitors 30% more exhibition space! Furthermore, according to a survey of the National Tourist Board, the DDR Museum is the most popular museum in Germany among foreign tourists. So is also has been a successful year for t he DDR Museum! The tenth year of the DDR Museum was a successful one and we are curious and are in great anticipation for 2017. | DDR Museum opens on all holidays! In order to offer you the possibility to visit the DDR Museum during your holidays we will be open during the Christmas holidays as well as on New Year`s Day. On the 24th and the 31st of December 2016, we will close the museum at 4pm. On every other holiday, we will be keeping our regular operating hours. We are looking forward to your visit! |

Schäfer's Little Hour Episode 16: Giso Weissbach
The actor Giso Weißbach in conversation with Alexander G. Schäfer
| Some are claiming that he is one of the most attractive actors in Germany. This is also the kind of roles he was given in TV shows as well as on theater stages: As a lover and as a man who knows how to read women or as a daredevil and marriage impostor in crime movies. His profound acting education and stage experience were very helpful in this aspect. In 1970 he started with a small role in the movie “He,Du!” of the DEFA film studio. Two years later he got the main role in the TV series “Das Licht der schwarzen Kerze”. Additional movie and TV productions, among them many episodes of the series Polizeiruf, followed. After the reunification, Weißbach mainly focused on theater and the show stage, he appeared, for example, in musicals such as “The Black Rider”. | In the blurb of Ricardo Tarli’s new book “Operationsgebiet Schweiz. Die dunklen Geschäfte der Stasi” (Operational area Switzerland. The dark deals of the Stasi) it says that „Switzerland was far from being the uncompromisingly anti-Communist bulwark it has been described as during the Cold War. The secret service of the DDR established a tight network within the neutral country where Swiss companies, banks and civil politicians were involved.”A group of experts will discuss the topics of the book and answer the questions of the audience. The language of the Wende – Exhibition opening and lecture
| “Life punishes those who delay” Gorbachev supposedly said in October 1989. Perhaps that was a free back translation from an agency report? Wherever it came from, the proverb was suddenly on everyone’s lips and deadly for the Honecker regime. Sayings and winged words have their very own life and force. In the autumn of 1989 there was an explosion of jokes and language on the streets. The nation that had been silent for decades now discovered its voice, however merely to lose it soon after. The DDR Museum is recalling some words and expressions of the Wende within an exhibition in the foyer by illustrating them with the help of objects. When Biermann left…
Concert and conversation – event in cooperation with the Jazzwerkstatt Berlin
| When Biermann left – or rather when he was sneakily thrown out – a lot went along with him: Not only many authors and artists but also the hope for a Socialism that would have been worth its name. We will remember this time in the form of a conversation and a concert. Present will be Uschi Brüning, probably the most popular jazz singer of the DDR, Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, one of the founding fathers of the East German jazz scene as well as Ulli Blobel, founder of the jazz studio Peitz which was banned by the SED authorities in 1982. Places From the Everyday Life in the DDR – Part 1: The SEZ
The Sport- und Erholungszentrum Berlin-Friedrichshain (SEZ)
| „Cheerfulness is present here all year long“ the newspaper “Berliner Zeitung” wrote on March 21st in 1981. The wave pool was probably the most fun. You could also use the tanning beds, sweat in the sauna, enjoy indoor ice skating or observe the activities from one of the many restaurants. No wishes remained unfulfilled here. Berliners and guests of the capitol visited the sports and leisure center in flocks, especially since the prices were very affordable due to the subsidization of the institution. Along numerous photos, the former head of the SEZ, Hartmut Hempel, will tell something about the history and development of the biggest institutions for culture and sports in East Berlin. Film screening and discussion
| Anke and her friends are at the age of 14 – 18 when the Wall came down. Their parents are teachers, pastors, army officers and journalists. During the transition of youth to adulthood, their entire existence is questioned all of a sudden. They are watching incredulously when the life they had been living until then is being declared invalid from one day to the other. What remains from this childhood in the DDR? Anke Ertner has given the “Generation ‘89” a voice in her interview movie for the first time. The producer and director of the remarkable movie which has already won a number of prizes as well as some protagonists will be present after the screening of the movie and available for a conversation. | Wall-Quiz The border through Berlin is hardly conceivable today: It devided families, friends and colleagues. Nearly 30 years it imprisoned the people. 136 persons payed for the trial to overcome it with their lives. The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 was cheered by an entire nation. 20 years after, a lot is forgotten or repressed. There is much to be learnt from this game and lots of fun to be had, wether you're playing alone or in a group, and for Wall connoisseurs and Wall novices alike! |

The DDR Museum
The DDR Museum is Berlin's interactive museum and shows the life in the GDR in his permanent exhibition. The museum was established in 2006 and has been one of Berlin's most visited museums since 2007. The concept "A hands-on experience of history" is considered to be unique in the world.
