Encourage social distancing at your hospital with these tips

As we incorporate social distancing measures into our everyday routines to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), hospitals across the country continue to encourage staff and patients to do the same. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles recognizes the importance of making it easy for staff members to practice social distancing. Since the virus began spreading across the United States, the hospital has established the following five protocols to protect staff and patients.

Pennsylvania Superior Court: Some credentials committee documents not protected under peer review privilege

The Pennsylvania Superior Court (the “Court”) affirmed a trial court’s decision, finding that a credentials committee is considered a review organization, not a review committee, and therefore, certain peer review documents may not be protected under peer review privilege.

Retention and orientation: Hospitalists

The job postings in hospitalist-targeted publications provide ample anecdotal evidence that the demand for hospitalists outweighs the supply. As a result, retention should be foremost—whether your hospitalist program is well established or just getting on its feet. To reduce turnover, consider investing in a formal, standardized retention program that involves participation by medical staff leaders and hospitalists on staff. Consider ways to make retention a part of the organization’s culture, rather than a stand-alone goal.

Hospitalist orientation guides

Make sure that you are covering all of the bases in your orientation program: Use comprehensive checklists detailing new hospitalists’ first days on the job. They should be specific, down to the detail of naming the individual who will tour the new physician through the facility on day one, for example. Download these sample checklists for orientation days one and four, used primarily to ensure that pertinent information is covered with the new hospitalist.

Hospitalist retention survey

This sample form is used for surveying new hospitalists. This form may be administered to the new hospitalists by the hospitalist program director, medical director, or other appropriate medical staff leader in a one-on-one meeting approximately six to 10 weeks after the physician’s start date.
