By 2034, there will be a shortage of physicians ranging from 37,800 to 124,000, according to a recent report prepared for the Association of American Medical Colleges.

The goal of physician review is to evaluate the appropriateness of care, independent of patient outcome. Although reviewers often believe that outcome is of primary importance, it is well known that a patient can have an adverse outcome that is not due to physician care or have an acceptable outcome despite a significant lapse in care (e.g., a so-called “near miss”).

The ABIM Foundation, created by the American Board of Internal Medicine, will spend the next few years focusing on ways to increase trust among healthcare stakeholders. Through its Building Trust campaign, the Foundation hopes to identify and eliminate the reasons for decreased trust among patients, clinicians, system leaders, researchers, and others representing the U.S. healthcare system.
