Can medical staff leaders succeed themselves?

Medical staffs often struggle to fill leadership positions because they require training and experience. Therefore, when they find someone willing to do it year after year, they may want to reappoint him or her to the position. But is this okay?

Many healthcare workers, including physicians, may be putting patients at risk by continuing to work when they have symptoms of cold, flu, or other respiratory illnesses, according to a new study published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

Revisiting an ongoing problem: MEC meeting length

Does your medical executive committee (MEC) suffer through long meetings, unproductive diatribes, filibusters, broken records (i.e., bringing up the same old issues and rehashing them over and over), and complaints from members that the meetings are just too long? Specifically, he or she has special competence in diagnosing and treating women with complications of pregnancy, preexisting medical conditions that may be affected by pregnancy, and medical conditions that affect pregnancy.

Meeting management for MSPs

The medical executive committee (MEC) is the only committee required for an organized medical staff, according to Joint Commission standards. Despite their arguments to the contrary, however, few modern healthcare organizations could survive with only one committee. A variety of other committees report findings and activities to the MEC and act on the MEC’s recommendations.

Medical executive committee meeting agenda

Effective meetings rely on a well-planned agenda. Standing meetings often include the same agenda items each month, which aids the planning process; any follow-up from previous meetings should also be included. The chair of each committee must sign off on the agenda prior to each scheduled committee meeting. Getting committee chairs to review and approve the agenda can be challenging because committee chairs are notoriously busy.
