1.    Check out our renewed website
We have been renewing our website in the past few months and are proud of the result! Check it out at www.ekoenergy.org.

For many energy consumers, as well as our licensees and partners, our website is a prime source of information about EKOenergy's work and about our concrete impact. See, for example, pages on why to choose EKOenergy and with an overview of our results.

We're always happy to update and improve!

Our website is available in 13 languages and 7 more language versions will be completed soon.
2.   Solar energy in Nepal thanks to users of EKOenergy
All users of EKOenergy contribute to our Climate Fund, through which we finance new renewable energy projects that fight energy poverty.

Earlier this year, EKOenergy and the Siemenpuu Foundation organised a joint call for solar energy projects in Mali, Myanmar and Nepal. We are now happy to announce that the first project has been selected.

EKOenergy's Climate Fund will grant 35,000 € to the project proposed by the Centre for Rural Technology, Nepal (CRT/N). The grant will enable CRT/N to install a 10 kW solar mini-grid in a remote, off-grid mountain village and help them develop their advocacy and promotion of solar energy in Nepal.

"EKOenergy supports our strategy to opt for 100% green electricity. We were convinced by the approach that we receive an internationally recognised green electricity label. In addition, through SAP’s investment in EKOenergy's Climate Fund, we invest in new projects for climate protection and renewable energy."

- Marcus Wagner, Global Environmental Manager at SAP

3.   New: EKOenergy awards for licensees
EKOenergy is available worldwide thanks to our licensed sellers and we are thankful to all of them for their efforts. In addition to recognising their work in our social media posts and newsletters, we have now launched the annual EKOenergy awards:

- “EKOenergy’s Ivy Award” for the licensee who has shown remarkable perseverance in promoting EKOenergy-labelled electricity.

- “EKOenergy’s Bamboo Award” for the licensee who has had the highest growth percentage of EKOenergy sales in the past calendar year.

More about this in the last week of May! Stay tuned.
4.   Merve Günger at REC Market Webinar series
RECS International is organising an interesting series of webinars about various aspects of the renewable energy markets worldwide.

Merve Güngör from our Secretariat will give a presentation in the next webinar, on 14 May.

Together with Adam White from RECS International and Liesbeth Switten from the AIB, she will speak about the developments in Energy Attribute Certificate markets. The webinar will also address the challenges posed by some countries choosing to develop new, stand-alone attribute-tracking systems.

5.    EKOenergy in South East Asia
Consumers, in particular large corporate consumers such as the members of the RE100, are now looking for ways to buy 100% renewable electricity in South East Asia too.

In these emerging renewable energy markets, I-REC certificates are becoming an increasingly available and popular tool to prove the origin of electricity. Recently, the I-REC Foundation appointed a local issuer in Thailand.

As renewable electricity markets develop, EKOenergy-labelled electricity becomes more widely available. Several of our licensed sellers are already able to provide EKOenergy-labelled energy or Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) in South-East Asia. Contact us to find out more.
6.   IRENA's Coalition for Action: joint statement on green recovery
IRENA's Coalition for Action, of which EKOenergy is a proud and active member, launched a joint statement in response to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and the way forward.

Renewable energy is easy to mobilise and makes it possible to power essential services such as healthcare and food production in a clean, reliable and cost-effective way. This makes renewables crucial in the immediate response to COVID-19.

Renewable energy must also play a key role in economic recovery, ensuring sustainability and energy security, creating jobs and strengthening resilience to protect people’s health and welfare. No other industry can match such impact while simultaneously reducing global climate emissions.

"Participating in a European Solidarity Corps project at EKOenergy’s secretariat seemed to me an excellent way to cultivate my interest in sustainability and become part of a multicultural community.”

7.   How to make Europe's energy system climate-neutral before 2050
SolarPower Europe and LUT University have launched a new report that models 100% renewable energy scenarios for Europe, with the goal to reach climate neutrality before 2050.

The study is the first of its kind to model a fully renewable pathway to achieving climate neutrality for the European energy system, presenting three transition pathways, with varying levels of ambition.

A key finding of the report is that the ambitious 100% renewable scenario results in lower per unit energy costs and is more cost-effective compared to scenarios that show a lower level of ambition.
