Dear readers,
February and March are always extremely busy with the preparations for the film festival Berlinale and the International Tourism Fair ITB in Berlin.
The Berlinale networking event at the Embassy was very successful and young producers and directors showed trailers to films they want to produce or are in the process of making and it is inspiring to see the great potential that comes from the South African film industry. We would like to see more ties with the strong German film industry. Especially since in the past years we have seen an increase in the German film (example âThe most awsome dayâ) and television industry (example âSing my Songâ) using South Africa as a beautiful highlight for their films or shows.
This brings me straight to my second point â the increase of German visitors to South Africa. This year we once again have the opportunity to awe tourists with what South Africa has to offer at the ITB. With one big stand that lets 88 South African exhibitors, including South Africa´s provinces, showcase their South Africa we are looking forward to welcoming you to the stand and subsequently in South Africa.
With my warmest wishes.
Horst H. Brammer â Chargé dâAffaires a.i. of the Republic of South Africa to the Federal Republic of Germany.
For the first time a South African production running in one of the major Berlinale Sections, Panorama, has won an award. Of 51 movies submitted by 33 countries, the film 'Shepherds and Butchers,' produced by Anant Singh and directed by Oliver Schmitz, was awarded the third place Panorama Audience Award for Fiction Films.
At the start of the Berlin Film Festival Berlinale, the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in co-operation with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) hosted a networking function. It allowed South African and German directors, film producers, investors and production company owners to meet and exchange ideas.
Chargé d`Affaires a.i. Horst Brammer greeted the guests and emphasized that âone of the most important bilateral agreements between Germany and South Africa, within the framework of the Bi-National Commission, is in the field of visual arts and film. Our two countries agreed: âto implement measures within the scope of their respective abilities, to provide each other with assistance, particularly with regard to co-operating in the field of cinematography, as well as visits by delegations and individual specialists in the field of cinematography.â
Mrs Maziko Thembakazi, Assistant Director of Service Based Industries, introduced some of the South African filmmakers who had the chance to present their companies and current projects â amongst them actress and producer Xolile Tshabalala with her film âMiraculous Weaponsâ which engaged and entire community of her hometown and made everyone a part of her film.
The African Ambassadors Dialogue with business was hosted by the Deutscher Industrie- und Handelskammertag (DIHK) at Haus der Deutschen Wirtschaft, Breite Str. 29, 10178 Berlin.
As in previous years the Dialogue offered German business representatives the opportunity to personally engage with African Ambassadors and their respective Economic Counsellors. During the B-2B Networking Session African partners were available for discussions on trade and investment with and in Africa at country tables.
A LABOUR OF LOVE presents more than 150 works from the Weltkulturen Museumâs collection, produced in the 1980s by black South African artists, together with twenty new artistic productions by Sam Nhlengethwa, Gabi Ngcobo and art students from Johannesburg, specifically created for this exhibition.
The exhibition A LABOUR OF LOVE focusses on a key part of the Weltkulturen Museumâs contemporary art collection: 600 works from South Africa which the museum acquired in 1986. These works were all produced by black artists, including internationally renowned figures such as Peter Clarke, Lionel Davis, David Koloane and Sam Nhlengethwa.
A LABOUR OF LOVE comes 28 years after the first exhibition of this collection was held in Frankfurt. It re-examines a selection of 150 works inspired by very different readings of the idea of love â prints, paintings, sculptures and to date unpublished archival materials reflect on the theme from interpersonal relations to the passion and commitment which influenced both the creation of the works and the history of the collectionâs acquisition.
The exhibition also integrates a contemporary perspective on this special collection through ten new works produced by Gabi Ngcobo and four South African art students, who have dealt with the collection and its specific history since mid-July 2014. In this process of artistic reappraisal, the students have responded to the collection by creating new prints and videos. This perspective is further expanded by works created in the Weltkulturen Labor by Sam Nhlengethwa, during a residency in July 2015. Accordingly to the museumâs concept, the new works will be added to the collection.
The exhibition is curated by Gabi Ngcobo (artist, curator, educator at the Wits School of Arts Johannesburg and co-curator of the 32nd Bienal de São Paulo) and Dr. Yvette Mutumba (curator Africa Weltkulturen Museum). Participating artists: Sam Nhlengethwa (artist, Johannesburg), Gabi Ngcobo as well as Wits School of Arts students Chad Cordeiro, Michelle Monareng, Nathaniel Sheppard and Matshelane Xhakaza.
This exhibition will be travelling to South Africa.

Human Rights Day is a national day that is commemorated annually on 21 March to remind South Africans about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in South Africa. The commemoration provides the country with an opportunity to reflect on progress made in the promotion and protection of human rights.
The 1960s were characterized by systematic defiance and protest against apartheid and racism across the country. On 21 March 1960, the community of Sharpeville and Langa townships, like their fellow compatriots across the country, embarked on a protest march to march protest against pass laws. The apartheid police shot and killed 69 of the protesters at Sharpeville, many of them shot while fleeing. Many other people were killed in other parts of the country. The tragedy came to be known as the Sharpeville Massacre and it exposed the apartheid governmentâs deliberate violation of human rights to the world.
The democratic government declared March 21 Human Rights Day to commemorate and honour those who fought for our liberation and the rights we enjoy today. Our Constitution is hailed as one of the most progressive in the world. The Constitution is the ultimate protector of our Human Rights, which were previously denied to the majority of our people under Apartheid. We commemorate Human Rights Day to reinforce our commitment to the Bill of Rights as enshrined in our Constitution.
These rights include:
⢠Equality â everyone is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection and benefit of the law.
⢠Human dignity â everyone has inherent dignity and have their dignity respected and protected.
⢠Freedom of movement and residence â everyone has a right to freedom of movement and to reside anywhere in the country.
⢠Language and culture â everyone has the right to use the language and to participate in the cultural life of their choice.
⢠Life - everyone has the right to life.
The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa will remain closed on 21 March 2016.
The event was celebrated at the Alice Campus of the University through the delivery of the Zachariah Keodirelang âProfessor ZKâ Matthews Memorial Lecture by Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi, an alumnus who was a student at the University of Fort Hare during ZK Matthewsâ time. Among the guests present, was our former Ambassador Reverend Makhenkesi Arnold Stofile, the Chancellor-Elect of the University of Fort Hare, as well as Minister of Higher Education, âBladeâ Nzimande and Minister of Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa.
Reverend Stofile will be officially installed as University of Fort Hare Chancellor in May, during the universityâs graduation ceremonies, which will be attended by several African state presidents.
