Dear readers,
Looking back on the month of September, which is South Africa`s Heritage Month, I dwell on the fine artists that our rich diverse background has brought about. Whether they are singers, musicians, authors, poets, dancers, painters, film makers, graphic designers: they all draw from our past, which shows that despite all horrors there can be a transition into a peaceful nation. Yes, I know there are still challenges and there always will be, as in every country; but culture and art can help to overcome painful pasts and transform them into a brighter future. They help us not to forget what has been and will carry their heritage in their DNA to bridging gaps and keeping the dialogue alive. I am therefore very grateful that our former President Nelson Mandela had the foresight to create a national holiday on 24 September, which gives us time to reflect on our Heritage.
In the coming month we commemorate our struggle hero Oliver Reginald Tambo, who was born on 27 October and fought for a free and democratic South Africa - first in his home country and later on from various countries in exile. He gave a passionate speech to the United Nations in New York in October 1963. His speech received standing ovations and inspired the UN resolution XVIII of 11 October 1963, calling on the South African government to release all political prisoners. For more information on his life, please visit: http://www.sahistory.org.za/people/oliver-reginald-tambo
In Germany, the month of October is the time of the year where we give thanks. Let us take a moment and thank leaders with vision that broke down barriers in South Africa and also in Germany, which celebrates the unification of east and west on 3 October.
You can read more about Embassy activities, South Africa related events in germany as well as selected News from South Africa in this monthâs newsletter. I hope that you will enjoy reading it.

Horst H. Brammer â Chargé dâAffaires a.i. of the Republic of South Africa to the Federal Republic of Germany.
Oliver Reginald Tambo (27 October 1917[1] â 24 April 1993) was a South African anti-apartheid politician and revolutionary who served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1967 to 1991.
led the African National Congress through its decades of banishment and its guerrilla war against the South African Government
Together Mr. Tambo and Mr. Mandela, who co-founded the congress's youth league in 1944, reinvigorated a flagging anti-apartheid organization into a militant liberation movement, preaching civil disobedience and mass protest. Congress members still sing a liberation war song with the chorus: "Tambo is coming!"
"It is our responsibility to break down barriers of division and create a country where there will be neither Whites nor Blacks, just South Africans, free and united in diversity."
The German-South African Binational Commission co-chaired by the respective Foreign Ministers is held every two years, alternating between Berlin and Pretoria. The two partner countries debate global challenges and coordinate possible collaboration in politics, the economy, environment, development cooperation, defence, education, science, technology, culture and labour and social affairs.
A recurring topic is reform of the United Nations Security Council â both Germany and South Africa are non-permanent members of the SC. Similar values form the basis of the intensive and manifold bilateral relations which constitute a solid partnership. Former Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said at the BNC in 2012 that even though Germany and South Africa are separated by thousands of kilometres, they are bound together by the same experience: âthe longing of their people for freedom, fundamental principles of law and human dignity â all of this is stronger than barbed fences.â
The Commission was established as a result of President Nelson Mandela's state visit to Germany in 1996. Ever since, the Binational Commission has contributed immensely to further strengthening German-South African relations. In 2014, the Commission met for the eighth time, in Pretoria.
The next session will take place in Berlin in November 2016.
Sport is a wonderful bridge building exercise, said Minister Horst Brammer when he met the Canoeing South Africa team in Brandenburg an der Havel at this year's World Kayaking Championships. We are very proud of their huge success: two gold, two silver and two bronze medals in the Championship, the prize of being number one Kayak team in the world as well as three gold, three silver and six bronze medals for the Masters group. Team SA Manager Nigel Briggs was especially proud when he was asked to present the gold medals to the athletes who had achieved them. He informed the Minister that they had 16 world championship athletes, 23 masters athletes as well as 16 parents and wives to support them.
More good news: Pietermaritzburg in Kwa Zulu Natal, has been granted the rights to host the next World Championships from 5th to 10th September 2017!
Berlin based South African Photographer and Filmmaker Thabo Thindi has been selected Street Projections project, which forms part of the European Month of Photography.
The project StreetProjections brings street photography back to the streets. Different realities from around the world will be displayed by night through projections on the sidewalk of the Kurfürstendamm.
The photographs were selected in a competition by an international jury and show how different and extensive life can be on the streets of the world. At the same time, they sharpen the focus on the local environment.
The traffic tower (Verkehrskanzel), the place of projections, is surrounded by one of the liveliest and most exciting streets in Berlin. The nighttime image sequences on the floor invite passers-by to linger and marvel.
This project is an official part of the European Month of Photography in October 2016 the biggest photo festival in Germany.

âKill the gaysâ pastor Steven Anderson and his church have been prohibited from entering South Africa, said Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba on 13 September at Parliament at a media briefing.
In his statement, Minister Gigaba pointet out that: âSouth Africa has to work towards reaching its constitutional goals ... It is a constitutional imperative for organs of state and society at large to protect and jealously defend the rights of all people.â
Furthermore, Minister Gigaba said that the Immigration Act of 2002 âprohibits the admission of foreigners likely to promote hate speech or advocate social violence.â
South Africa is currently hosting the 17th Conference of Parties of the Convention of the CITES at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg from 24 September to 5 October 2016. South Africa was a founding member of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in Wild Fauna and Flora, known as the CITES Treaty.
The Conference of Parties meets every three years to consider amendments to the appendices, make recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the convention and assess the implementation of the convention.
This convention was adopted on 3 March 1973, and came into force on 1 July 1975.
As the third most mega-biodiverse country in the world, South Africa has taken numerous leadership roles in the conservation of biodiversity at all levels by working with different partners at national, regional and global levels. This is one of the reasons why, at this crucial time when the convention is faced with complex trade and conservation issues, South Africa is most suited to hosting the meeting.
CITES regulates international trade in over 35 000 species of plants and animals, including their products and derivatives, ensuring their survival in the wild with benefits for the livelihoods of local people and the global environment.
South Africa has a proud and long successful conservation record. Central to South Africaâs conservation model, is an undisputed record of having brought numerous species of wild plants and animals to a healthy population level. Among these, are the white and black rhino, which had come close to extinction almost a century ago.
South Africaâs participation at CITES is supported by the Governmentâs policy of sustainable utilisation of natural resources as a biodiversity conservation tool.

Award-winning veteran journalist, columnist and author, Allister Sparks, has died at the Morningside Mediclinic in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Sparks' son, Michael, says his heart stopped beating on the morning of Monday, 19 September 2016.
Sparks published his memoirs, "The Sword and the Pen", on his 83rd birthday in March 2016.
In May2015, he found himself at the centre of a social media storm for having named apartheid architect Hendrik Verwoerd as one of the many "smart" politicians he'd met during his 64-year-long career.
However, Sparks apologised for having caused offence and for having cited only white leaders while paying tribute to outgoing Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille at the party's federal congress in Port Elizabeth.
Sparks was the editor of the former Rand Daily Mail when it broke the Muldergate story about the apartheid government having secretly funded information projects.
In the early 1990s, he founded the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism in Johannesburg, served on the SABC Board and was also the public broadcaster's Television News editor-in-chief.
A memorial is being scheduled for Friday, October 14, at 11am at the Braamfontein Crematorium.
