Competition Results

The results from the 2012 Chelsea International Fine Art Competition are in! Mr. Ira Goldberg, Executive Director of the Art Students League of New York and juror of this year's competition, selected artists to receive a number of varied prizes, all aimed at increasing their public presence as artists. The selected artists work in diverse styles and mediums.

Congratulations to all who entered. As Agora Gallery's director, Angela Di Bello, says, "Entering competitions takes energy, courage and strong belief in oneself and anyone who simply enters competitions is a winner.”

April 5th - Opening Reception

On the evening of Thursday, April 5, 2012, a special crowd gathered at Agora Gallery in preparation for the opening reception of our current exhibitions, Elements of Abstraction, Portals of Perception and the solo exhibition featuring the work of Fred Friedrich. The artists who had been able to make it to New York to take part in the event chatted to gallery staff and got to know each other before the doors were opened to admit the art lovers who had come to enjoy the art, the atmosphere and of course the experience of meeting the artists themselves.

Fin de Ciel: Fred Friedrich / a Solo Exhibition was a hit with the viewers, with the artist’s meaningful, emotionally charged works reaching out to embrace a range of ideas and backgrounds. Many visitors spent time examining, admiring and discussing the works, which display Friedrich’s masterful technique and depth of vision. Many other artworks also came in for particular attention, including that of Marc Laberge, whose unusual use of burnt wood adds an especially enthralling note to his creations, Nadine Y. Jeners, who uses minimalistic design and striking colors to great effect and Julio Crews, whose works pulse with a beautiful dynamism. In addition the mysterious, beautiful art of Barry Grose, and the lovely, colorful landscapes of Leigh Gusterson received admiring notice, as did the evocative and compelling creations of Laura Pritchard, the harmonious explorations of Julio Lugo Rivas and the dazzling, colorful works of Heidi Kirschner.

The evening was one to remember, as the vibrant artworks and the lively conversation provided a perfect match to the spring evening outside.

Kudos and Accolades

We are delighted to congratulate Shifra and Kelly Tunney on their recent achievements. It is a pleasure to see their considerable talent being so widely and publically recognized.

Fine art photographer Shifra recently received an award for Distinguished Artistic Achievement & Outstanding Contribution. Shifra’s work will soon be displayed at Agora Gallery as part of Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography which opens on April 24, 2012.

Kelly Tunney was the recipient of not one, not two, but FIVE awards in five separate categories, including the 'Epson Professional Photographer of the Year' category and the 'Highest Scoring Print' category at the 2012 Australian Institute of Professional Photography Epson NSW/ACT Professional Photography Awards. Kelly's work will be on display this June in The Manifestation of Milieu scheduled to run from June 12 through July 3.

NYC Spring Tips

Cherry Blossom at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden - Spring is here and the streets and parks of New York City have started coming to beautiful life with trees in blossom. This year, the cherry blossom season in particular is even more special than usual, as we are celebrating the 100 year anniversary of Japan’s gift of the first Sakura tree to the United States in 1912. If you’re paying attention when you visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, you’ll be able to admire each and every one of the one hundred cherry trees there. If you can’t make it there in person, you can enjoy and monitor the progress of the blossoms by checking the Botanical Garden’s website: http://www.bbg.org/discover/cherries/ . If you keep returning to the site you’ll be able to see the dots turn into flowers as each tree comes into bloom – but make sure not to miss the peak of this stunning season; the blossom doesn’t last very long.

Keith Haring at Brooklyn Museum Until July 18th, the Brooklyn Museum is hosting an exhibition about Haring's early artwork that any fans of his work should make a point of visiting.

Salon de Ning is the bar on the top floor of the Peninsula Hotel, on 55th Street and 5th Avenue. It boasts an incredible view of the city, including the whole of the famous 5th Avenue and the luxury penthouses that surround the hotel. The bar is memorable partly due to its beautiful décor, and art lovers will be delighted by the works on the walls – and thrilled by the paintings which are unexpectedly installed on the ceiling!
