HMRC Fulfilment House Due Diligence Scheme

February 2018

Embassy Freight UK has been selected to be one of the test companies to assist HMRC ahead of the scheme launch on 01 April 2018.

The Scheme is part of a package of measures announced at Budget 2016 that will disrupt and deter abuse by some overseas businesses selling goods to UK customers via online marketplaces. Fulfilment businesses in the UK will have to register with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) from 2018, keep certain records and carry out robust due diligence checks on their overseas customers. This will make it more difficult for non-compliant overseas businesses to trade in the UK and will enable HMRC to identify and tackle them more easily. HMRC will publish the register to allow businesses to check whether they are dealing with compliant fulfilment businesses.

Amazon is driving growth on FBM

February 2018

Returning from a trip to China, Mark Hall, Commercial Director of Embassy Freight UK reported a significant number of enquires from Amazon sellers who are looking to take the fulfilment away from Amazon to drive down costs. Hall said “Our FBM product was designed for small e-tailers with 20-70 picks a day who couldn’t afford the technology and overheads that Amazon customers expect, hence this filled the gap. This has put us in an excellent position to provide an immediate solution to the needs of these established sellers”.

At the moment, there is a severe shortage in truck capacity in the United States.

This is due to the following factors:

  • The new electronic logging device (ELD) regulation
  • Winter weather

  • Congestion at both sea and rail terminals

New VAT regulation in UAE

February 2018

As from January 2018, a new VAT regulation on import cargo has been implemented in the United Arab Emirates.

From now on, 5% import Value Added Tax (VAT) will be charged by customs on the CIF value and customs duty value of imported goods.
This means that the value includes freight and insurance charges plus customs duties, excise duties and any other charge that may occur.

The importer needs to have a TRN (Transaction Reference Number), which can be applied for the FTA (Federal Tax Authority)

Companies situated in the Jebel Ali Free zone are exempted from this rule.

Visit our country page for more information about United Arab Emirates.
