Attempts by container lines to boost rates on the main Asia-Europe trades in the last weeks of the peak season, via 1 September general rate increases (GRIs), appear to have faded, with average ocean freight spot rates for last week and this week showing slight declines. This indicates that this year’s ocean freight peak season may not be as strong as the rate and volume recovery in the first half year had suggests. GRIs, in the initial week of September, have been deferred, the peak season rate growth is expected to be moderate this year

Transpacific freight rates for this week were also slightly below last week’s levels. Average spot rates on routes from Asia to the US west coast fell 3% , and spot rates from Shanghai to the US east coast fell by 5.7%.

In 2017 China celebrates it's National Golden Week from October 1st up to October 7th. This means that most factories, customs authorities and freight forwarders are closed during this week.

Hong Kong celebrates this holiday on October 1st and 2nd and they have another holiday on October 5th.

In the weeks preceding - week 39 and 40 - several carriers are cancelling one or more westbound sailings and there will be blank sailings.

The Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) will come into effect on September 21st, 2017 and is a trade agreement between Canada and the European Union.
CETA is meant to promote trade between the EU and Canada as well as making it easier and cheaper.

For almost all goods that are of Canadian preferential origin and are imported from Canada, a reduction of import duties applies. The same goes for goods exported to Canada that have a preferential origin in the EU.

On 17 July 2017, the Council of the EU adopted a set of temporary autonomous trade measures in favour of Ukraine. These measures should enter into force in September 2017.
The proposal aims at improving access for Ukrainian exporters to the EU market. The measures will be applied for a three-year period and consist of
 

• additional annual import quotas at zero tariff for products like grape juice, wheat and maize.
• full removal of import duties on several industrial products, such as footwaer, copper and aluminium.
