CURRICULUM COMMENT

Covid Update

There are 2 new active cases who tested positive over the last 2 days.
We have 7 new household contacts today.  Yesterday we had 4 cases who over the weekend were identified as positive whilst at home isolating as a close family contact.  We had 4 other children who are at home isolating as close contacts.

Lucy and Jen Chandler are at home for most of the week as they tested positive.  Dave and Coral are both back at school.

Kapahaka Marae Visit

Anne Jenkins and Coral Potter are planning a marae visit in week 3 of next term.  This is taking place on the 17th May, where the senior Kapahaka group (Year 5&6s) will be visiting Puketeraki Marae in Karitane.  They will be leaving on the morning of the 17th and returning the following day.

They will be travelling in vans and will require parents to bring cars for surplus children, and supervision purposes.  Parents of senior Kapahaka children please look out for an email from Anne and Coral regarding this.

Cyber Safety

Here is an important message from the Ministry of Education and N4L (Network for Learning).

When children learn from home, it’s important to make sure they stay safe online.  The Switch on Safety filter was launched during Aotearoa’s first Level 4 lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it remains available for whānau to continue to use to keep their children safe online.

The Wānaka Primary School Website - Student Page has 2 search engines that we recommend when children are hunting for information.  Google security is good but you can still see 'some' images or information that some parents will deem as inappropriate.

Top Bike Competition

Top Bike is a competition organised by Cycling Southland.  We have three teams of Year 6 students representing the school this year.  Teams are made of 3 girls and 3 boys.  Each team has to compete in a mountain bike team time trial, a grass race and a skills course.  Points are awarded at each station.  The team with the most points wins.  We are heading to Alexandra next Tuesday for the competition.  Good luck to all competing.

2022 EOTC and Snow Sports Results

The current EOTC and Snow Sports term 3 programme has been running for many years and we have just received your feedback on the current programme.  Please click here for a summary of the data.  Conclusions and recommendations from the data will be released in the coming week.

Maths at WPS

At Wānaka Primary we deliver a balanced maths programme where the teaching of mathematical strategies, basic facts, and rich maths tasks are all part of our maths programme.  Our cluster of Upper Clutha schools have joined together to undertake professional development, to continue our growth in the teaching of practical hands on maths that all children can relate to.

Along with our facilitator, Rob Proffitt-Whyte, we aim to create and implement balanced and high impact routines that have demonstrated capacity to improve both student performance and disposition as they explore mathematical skills, processes and competencies.

The aim is for all children to be able to connect with maths through designing, adapting and delivering the right tasks for a rich maths diet and along with our Deep learning to make all learning meaningful.

Rob is working directly with our school and students along with the other Upper Clutha primary schools.

This term the teachers have been developing a series of exercises with their classes called Rapid Routines, and these are proving to be a fun and engaging way for all children to learn maths.  All teachers and classes are involved in this professional learning and we have a lead team of teachers (1 from each pod) who spend time with Rob on our cluster training days.

ALiM - Accelerated Leaning in Maths

ALiM is another maths enhancement programme which supports and lifts student achievement in maths.  It is in addition to, and connected to, a student’s classroom programme.  For a small group of children this programme is designed to lift their understanding of mathematical concepts and confidence in their maths class.  It is a short daily programme which works along side their normal classroom maths group to give their confidence a lift so that they can achieve to their potential.  Over the last 3 years we have had 6 teachers undertake professional development in ALiM and we have a further 3 this year.

The activity below has some ideas you can use when travelling during our up-coming holidays or are just driving within Wānaka.

Garden To Table

A huge thankyou to the following people for making this happen:

Jill Blennerhassett who donated and loaded the bark onto the trailer.

Gini Rudhall for the use of her trailer and collecting the bark, horse manure, pea straw, and bins to hold compost materials.

Annie Cervelli who helped spread the materials onto the garden.

Upper Clutha Transport for donating some of the straw.

Lastly the young school children who came very willingly to unload the bark but weren’t so keen when the horse manure arrived.  It is a delight to have such keen and enthusiastic volunteers.

Thanks also to the people who purchased bulbs, it raised $450.  I appreciate all that Lucy did to organise this fundraiser.  These funds will go towards the development of our Gardens.

PB4L SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours.  The current goal is:  'We are kind, gentle and considerate of others and their property'.
