BOARD BUZZ

Recapitation Update

The year already seems to be flying by so I want to give a short update on the issue of potential recapitation. Since our survey and the Board discussions last year, the Ministry of Education are aware of our community's interest in this issue. There are many considerations to keep in mind however and we need to move forward with this as a community. We are continuing to work behind the scenes to build consensus and we will endeavour to represent our community as strongly as possible. None of this is a guarantee of success and we cannot promise timelines but we recognise your interest and will keep you informed of progress. If you have any questions please get in touch at bot@wanaka.school.nz
CURRICULUM COMMENT

Introducing our Librarian and Caretaker

Melissa - Librarian
Kia ora, I am Melissa the Librarian here at Wānaka Primary School.  I do believe I have the best job here at school.  I get to interact with all the children every week here in the library.  I am passionate about getting kids into reading and finding each child the book that suits their interest.  As one of my inspiring librarian gurus said to me once, "it doesn't matter what they read as long as they are enjoying it"!

When I am not with the classes I am busy ordering books or opening parcels - my absolute favourite chore!

Both my children, Kobi and Lucy, have been through Wānaka Primary School including at the old school site.

I am happy to assist any parent that wants help with book choices for their children.

In my spare time I enjoy being at home with my family and dogs (Humphrey is world famous in Wānaka) and tripping around "vintage shopping" in search of that treasure I haven't found yet (my beloved husband calls it hoarding!).

John - Caretaker
I am married to Sue and have 4 adult children, 2 of whom also live in Wānaka. I am Koru to Deacon and Brooke who are students at Wānaka Primary School.

I enjoy fishing trips with mates, following most sports and spending time with family.

Naming our Cook Book Competition

We have not had many entries to this competition...many of you out there must have some awesome names for our Cook Book. The competition ends on Friday this week, so come on all of our students and their families think up a funky name and put it in the box at reception.  Let's see which pod has the most entries...the winning pod gets to do the fun things we sometimes don't get time to do.

We are also keen for more recipes...these have been slow coming in.  The staff and the Board and of course the PTA have been invited to submit their recipes and we would love more from our families out there.  This is a great way to make money without you, the parents, (apart from those on the Cook Book team) having to do much at all.  WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT with this.  SO send those recipes in.

We have had 2 amazing parents, who are photographers, offer their support for the Cook Book and so the design team are eagerly awaiting recipes.

All funds raised from the Cook Book will go into providing the tools and equipment for our Maker Spaces which will be constructed hopefully by the end of the year.  We need heaps of gear such as sewing machines, woodwork tools, drills, a couple of 3-D printers, wood work/sewing/craft tables, materials like wood, plastic, wire and technology/science parts and storage units so all of our tools and materials can be kept organised and readily available.  We are looking to provide Maker Space areas in Pods 1-7.

Pod 7 Assembly this week

Hooray - it's our first assembly for the term on Friday and Pod 7 are looking forward to sharing their learning with you.  It's so good to be at level 1 so we can welcome you all into the hall to join Pod 7 and the rest of our school.

El Gregoe Magician and Comedian performance on Friday

This performance was well received by our children who loved the fun and magic of the show, and teachers love the great messages they give around our school values.

This performance is paid for by your school activity fee - if this hasn't been paid, please pay this as soon as possible.

Maths Session for Parents - Tuesday 16th March 7 - 8 pm

'What Parents Need to know to support their children in mathematics'.

We are working with Viv Thompson this year, around provision of a balanced maths programme.

Viv is going to lead a parent’s information session about what you need to know to support your kids at home.  She will also answer any questions you may have about the teaching of maths. Our leadership team and some staff will be there as well to respond to any queries.

As foundation literacies, we are always involved in professional learning and curriculum review in maths, reading, writing and oral language as these are the foundations of all learning.

Please come along, everyone is welcome. Room 25 Pod 7 (opposite the office entrance).

Kindling for Sale

We are selling banana boxes full of hand-picked kindling for $10 each to raise money for our girls' and boys' clubs to allow them to do their planned activities this year.  Come into the office to purchase a box, or they will be available outside assembly this Friday. Thank you for your support.

PTA NOTICES

PTA Meeting - Wednesday 10th March

A PTA Meeting is being held at 7pm in the staffroom tomorrow - Wednesday 10th March.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Our School Cookbook

The PTA have decided that one of our big fundraising projects for this year will be a school cookbook.  We have a small team from the PTA spearheading this and doing most of the work but WE NEED YOUR HELP to get started...then it’s up to us.

Cookbook title competition:

Recipes needed now:
We would love to receive your favourite family and special recipes. We will be sorting these into sections and we may have to cull where there are double ups etc so please don't be offended if your recipe doesn't make it into the final version.  We need lunchbox ideas, breakfast and brunch yummies, mains, picnic foods, desserts, starters and nibbles…any recipe that you think would suit a busy family.   To register and send us your recipe please use this link School Cookbook Recipes.  We want you to get these in as soon as possible, so we can sort and decide what sections to include in our cookbook, and identify the areas where we need more recipes.  So start now!  We would like the cookbook form completed by the 12th of March.

Copyright:
Please be aware that we need to stay clear of any copyright issues.  Recipes that are not subject to copyright include: family recipes, recipes that have been adapted/changed and have not simply been copied and recipes that lack originality – think cheese scones recipe.  Add your own flair or send us a recipe that has passed through the generations and is written in Granny’s handwriting somewhere.  We have added a statement to the Google Form where you are asked to declare that your recipe does not breach any copyright rules.

Photographer:
We are looking for a photographer to support this project. If you are interested in being involved please contact Wendy wendyb@wanaka.school.nz

That’s all you need to do - the rest is up to us.

Our timeline is that recipes to be included in the book will be finalised by the end of term 1. The photographer and design team get into action to do photos, layout etc. and so the draft book is ready for printing by the end of term 2 and we have a prototype ready for pre-orders at Friday Night Lights.  We hope to sell a few as Xmas presents.

Watch this space for opportunities for your business to support this project.

All funds raised from the cookbook will be used to purchase equipment, tools and resources for the Maker Spaces (to be built onto the back of each pod) that will hopefully be up and running by the end of the year using funds from the MoE we are entitled to through an innovation fund.

We saw so much wonderful cooking, construction, building, making, designing, sewing, electronics etc. being done over lockdown it will be exciting to have a space that is dedicated to the children applying their learnings and creating a masterpiece across all curriculum areas.  We will need building tables and tools, IT equipment (a 3D printer would be great), sewing machines, cooking equipment, electronic sets and tools, materials such as wood, plastic, and tools like drills, hammers and saws and bits and bobs such as nails, screws, pins etc.  We also need to have a robust storage system that can be built into the Maker Space so children know where to go to grab a tool and of course where to put it back..
