CURRICULUM COMMENT

Well Done Everyone

Well we have made it halfway through the term and given Omicron and the other bugs that have been doing the rounds we are still business as usual.  We had 10 active cases reported today which brings the total to 22 active cases, as of lunchtime today, with Pod 4 being the most affected pod.  Please continue to keep children home if they have any signs of being 'off colour'.  We have been notified that some children have presented with a sore back and/or limbs and have subsequently tested positive for Covid, so this is a new symptom to be mindful of.  Keep up the good work you are doing.

Thank you also to our wonderful teaching staff who have extra workloads as they now move into some home learning as well as classroom teaching, and our office staff who have extra administrative duties that Omicron brings, as well as all the other bugs that seem to be going around as well.

PTA - Parenting Place Presentation

The PTA have organised a fabulous live Zoom session for parents with Parenting Place.  It is quite costly so please make sure you capitalise on this opportunity to hear 2 great presenters, one of whom is a comedian, share experiences of parenting through Covid and where to go with your kids next as we face a still uncertain future with this global pandemic.

This is being held on Wednesday 23rd March, at 7pm.  This is the first of a series of parenting presentations (dependent on the number of participants that take part in this first Zoom).  These are relevant as parents and families move into yet another change as a result of Covid.  These presentations are put together with a Covid lens to support your parenting.  Please click on the link we will include in an email invitation we will send out to you tomorrow, and join us from the comfort of your own home, to learn about parenting styles, relationships and refocusing on the family team.  The PTA hope to have one of these Zoom sessions each term for parents if the uptake is positive enough.  The sessions are no more than 1 hour with 45 minutes of presentation around the theme and then 15-20 minutes for any questions.  Come on - join us!  This Zoom is only for Wānaka Primary School parents and as there is a cost involved for the PTA we would love your full support.  The Thursday 23rd March zoom will cover the following:

Team Building – presented by Pio Terei and Sheridan Eketone

  • Reset the family/children
  • Reset ourselves
  • Pause and breathe, bigger, wiser, stronger, Kind, Firm, Calm
  • Family values
  • Connect with your children
Remember you will receive the link shortly for this wonderful opportunity to learn more about parenting through tough times.  As the PTA value supporting you as parents we hope the majority of you will join us to ensure we get value for money for the PTA funds they are investing in this as we have not been able to get together face to face.

Thank You

Wilton Joubert has kindly provided sponsorship funding for extra programmes the school provided.  Thanks so much - we really appreciate this additional support in these tough financial times.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours.  The current goal is:  'We keep all areas tidy and pick up rubbish'.

HEALTH SNIPPETS

Head Lice

Head lice are (an unwelcome) part of life, and are easily spread between people, particularly children. The key to managing head lice is early detection: look through your child’s hair on a regular basis – nominate a certain night of the week so it becomes routine.

Use your fingers or a head lice comb, and look for little brown insects on the scalp. The eggs are almost invisible before they hatch, so by the time you spot the little white eggs on the hair shaft they are already hatched.

Do not treat your child unless you see live lice.

The best treatment is thorough combing with a head lice comb and lots of conditioner in the hair. This should be done every 2nd day for 10 days.

If you choose to use a head lice shampoo, you should still do the wet combing as described above. Shampoos do not kill eggs, and do not always kill all the live lice.

Do not use animal products on your child’s scalp. They are harmful to humans.

Tying hair up, especially long hair, is beneficial when trying to avoid catching headlice or spreading it.
