CURRICULUM COMMENT

Teacher Paid Union Meetings (PUM)

Teachers are attending a PUM (Paid Union Meeting) on Friday 22nd March and will be leaving school at 1.45pm to attend this offsite.  To save any disruption for parents, the leadership team will remain at school to supervise students from 1.45pm to 3.00pm, along with other staff members who are either not part of the union or opted to do the online option.

This is a long weekend as well so if you wish to pick your child up from school early on Friday, please collect them and sign them out from their own classroom at 1.30pm and no later than 1.45pm.  We are not allowed to close school for this Union Meeting, however any children who head home for the afternoon (i.e. after 1.30pm) will be counted as 'present' for the whole day.

If you are unable to pick your child up before then, please sign them out at the office and they will be found in the hall until 2pm and then they will be out in the playground.

The day will look like this:
09.00 - 10.30 am:     In class as usual
10.30 - 11.00 am:     Interval as usual
11.00 - 12.00 pm:     In class
12.00 - 12.30 pm:     Lunchtime - eating lunch, toilet, handwashing and a brief play
12.30 - 01.45 pm:     In class and children being picked up are signed out from their                                   classrooms
01.45 - 2.15 pm:       Students head to the hall.  Parents picking up children report to                                   the office to sign their children out
02.15 - 2.45 pm:       Play time (as per lunch break earlier)
02.45 - 3.00 pm:       Students back in the hall. Bell rings as usual at 3.00pm for                                           end of school

Murray Gadd - our writing facilitator from last year has written a book

And one of our very own teachers has appeared in a photo with a blurb, armed with her writing apron - see a scan of the page below.

Property Updates

  • The Pod 8 exterior paint job, to prevent further sun damage of the shadowclad began yesterday.
  • The makerspaces storage hubs are starting to be built by Cooks, behind the school hall, in the next week or so and once each unit is constructed they will be lifted into the space on one side of each pod.
  • The bike path behind the Kids Club classroom and Pods 3, 4 and 5 is completed.

Tutus on Tour

We were so fortunate to have this wonderful dance company perform dance and lead workshops last week as they were fabulous.  The emotive and very well executed dances were powerful in their storytelling.  Our year 3 and 4 children who took part in the dance workshops engaged fully and enjoyed their experience as well.  Many thanks to the Royal NZ Ballet for bringing their art to us here in Wānaka.

COVID and other viruses are hitting our school staff

We continue to have staff unwell and testing positive for Covid and also there is a nasty virus with cold/flu like symptoms as well.  Please bear with us if your children have a couple of different relievers within a few days at the moment, as we are trying to juggle a limited pool of our wonderful relievers with covering staff for school events as well as illness.

Random Reminders

  • Pod 4 is off to their Lagoon Visit on Thursday 14th March.
  • Pod 7's School Assembly this week, on Friday 15th March, is our first assembly for the year due to cancellations and other events.  Parents and friends of the school are welcome to attend.
  • Please remember to send your children along in correct school uniform each day, in particular plain socks, appropriate underwear, full brimmed hats, no caps, and sensible shoes so they can run around and do PE and sport activities.
  • Life Education Trust mobile classroom arrives next week for 3 weeks. Harold and Roshelle will be working with all classes on aspects of healthy eating.
  • Wednesday 20th March - Pod 1 are off to the LWC to watch Katie Bee, who is a bee fan and writes and performs to share her love of these wonderful creatures.
  • Wednesday 20th March - Melissa our amazing librarian has arranged for author, Steve Mushin, to share his books and work with Years 4, 5 and 6.
  • Monday 25th March - OTAGO ANNIVERSARY DAY holiday - yay a long weekend and a sleep in! And then a 3 day week!
  • Friday 29th March - EASTER FRIDAY holiday, Monday 1st April and Tuesday 2nd April - EASTER HOLIDAYS.  Back to school on Wednesday 3rd April. And then it's another 3 day week followed by a full week before the end of Term 1. The last day of term 1 is Friday 12th April.  Term 2 starts on Monday 29th April.

PB4L SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours.  The current goal is:  'We are prepared, organised and on task'.

PTA NOTICES

Tribe T-Shirts

We had an amazing response to the Tribe t-shirts at Athletics Day!  We have had lots of orders already and prompt payments.  Thank you!  Come into the office before the end of term to see the t-shirts, try on samples and place an order, $30 per t-shirt.  The first batch will be ready to wear at the Cross Country.  Another order will be made early next year.

We have had requests for adult sizes too, so will sort some samples and keep you posted!
Thanks, The PTA Crew.

Upper Clutha Athletics

The wind settled down and the sun provided perfect, warm conditions for the Upper Clutha Athletics last Friday.  We had 63 year five and six athletes qualify to represent our school across eight events.  Our athletes should be super proud of their efforts and the fairplay and supportive behaviour they demonstrated throughout the day.

Congratulations to everyone, and to the placegetters listed below:
