IMPORTANT NOTICES

Scholastic Book Club Issue 2 Orders

Scholastic apologises once again for any hold ups with the Book Club orders.  The Auckland warehouse has been overwhelmed by the rain they experienced and are working hard to send out orders.  Issue 2 orders will probably not arrive until term 2, however, after that period things should resume to normal.  We appreciate your patience.

Hot Cross Bun Morning Tea - Thursday 6th April

Please bring a gold coin donation.  A big thank you to New World for their support.

Pies and Savouries Fundraiser

We have joined forces with Kai Pai here in Wānaka and are selling their delicious pies and savouries.  These will make a fantastic snack or meal and a portion of the proceeds from the sales will be used to contribute to the landscaping projects that Wānaka Primary are currently working on.  Orders need to be made by FRIDAY 31ST MARCH and collection of orders will be available on TUESDAY 4TH APRIL 2023 (just before the holidays).

Term 3 Enrolments

This year Wānaka Primary School is not taking enrolments for children who intend to engage in any snowsport programmes during the school week.  Families will need to make their own arrangements for their children's schooling.

The correspondence school, Te Kura, is able to provide online learning whilst students are residing in Wānaka.  You can also approach your current school and seek online learning from them for term 3.

Enrolling at Wānaka Primary School is not an option for children who are in snowsports programmes during the school week, as this does not constitute regular attendance.
CURRICULUM COMMENT

Update from Wendy

First of all SCHOOL IS OPEN TOMORROW.  Primary Schools are not striking as we are still in negotiations.  Secondary Schools only are on strike tomorrow.  Let's hope some agreement comes quickly to avert further action for primary schools.  Come on Jan Tinette - we need smaller classes and more resourcing for the benefit of all our kids.  There's nothing wrong with our curriculum - we just need time, and staffing to be able to work with ALL children in smaller group settings and one to one!

We had a lot of success at the UC Zone Athletics last week and tomorrow, weather pending, we have 39 athletes taking part in the main COPSSA event.  Good luck everyone.

Pod 7 had a fabulous trip to Arrowtown yesterday.  The children and teachers have been buzzing about the experience they had within different parts of the Museum complex.  Many thanks to the fabulous group of parents who helped transport and support groups on the day.  You are all TUMEKE!  I am sure that lots of learning about our NZ History took place.

On Wednesday 23rd March, our Physical Activity Leaders (PALs) took part in some training for their role as facilitators of games and activities out in the playground at play and lunchtimes.  See more info about this and photos below.

Pod 3 shared their learning for the term at their assembly last Thursday 24th, and what a great job they did for Year 2 students.  I loved the awesome public speaking and confidence of our tamariki.

The NZ ballet worked with our Year 3 and 4 students in ballet workshops - the children participated in these so enthusiastically and gee they were cute executing some quite demanding ballet moves that caused me, who stupidly gave it a go, to limp most of the weekend!

And Friday afternoon last week was a blaze of colour and activity as the Tribes got into action around our PB4L protocols and expectations.  Photos and a blurb are also included below.

Progress and Achievement Tests (PATs)

New Zealand teachers use a variety of tests to determine what level students are at, what progress they are making, and where they may need extra help. Progressive Achievement Tests, commonly known as PATs, are one of the main sets of tests schools use.

PATs are multiple-choice tests designed to help teachers determine achievement levels of students in Listening Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, Reading Vocabulary and Mathematics. The test results help teachers decide what kinds of teaching materials are needed and which methods or programmes are most suitable for their students. PATs are also important because they identify the progress a student is making from year to year.

All PATs are available as online tests. Schools can also buy printed PATs from the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER), an independent research organisation which first developed the tests more than 30 years ago.

PAT: Reading Comprehension assesses how well Year 4 to 10 students understand the text they are reading. Each test is organised around several extended pieces of writing which include stories, poems, reports and explanations.

PAT: Reading Vocabulary assesses Year 4 to 10 students’ ability to understand the words they read. Each question is based around a key word that is embedded in a short sentence. Students are asked to choose a synonym that best represents the meaning of this word from a list of five possible alternatives.

PAT: Listening Comprehension measures Year 3 to 10 students' ability to understand spoken material. Students listen to a passage and then answer questions. It helps teachers detect children with poor listening skills and is also useful in identifying those children whose listening comprehension performance is significantly different from their ability to comprehend written material.

PAT: Mathematics covers number knowledge, number strategies, algebra, geometry and measurement, and statistics. PAT: Mathematics is for Years 4 to 10, but there is an additional, slightly easier test aimed at Year 4 which some schools choose to use in Year 3.

We have now completed our PAT (Progress and Achievement Tests) in Listening Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, Reading Vocabulary and Mathematics.  We do these every year mid term 1. The results were collated and analysed over the last week or so and Kerry presented an achievement report to the Board last night.  We are so delighted with the results which show we have maintained our high standards in these tests, even after a very disrupted 2 or 3 years with Covid.

The graph below shows the curve of distribution to be used to see how our school compares to national data from these tests.   Compare these to the graphs below and you will see our results are very pleasing.

The graph showing achievement nationally on these normed tests

Here are the graphs showing the results for Wānaka Primary School students. The red line indicates the national norm. For the listening comprehension (Year 3-6) we have 92% achieving at or above the national norm of 77%.

For Reading Vocabulary (Year 4-6) we have 91% achieving at or above the national norm.

We have 93% achieving at or above the national norm in Reading Comprehension.

We have 90% achieving at or above the national norm in mathematics.

We will include the full report with year level, gender and ethnicity breakdowns on our website next term.  I will notify you in a newsletter when this has been uploaded.  You can find out more about a child's individual results in these tests from your classroom teacher.

Tribe Afternoon

We had our first tribe afternoon with our newly appointed Tribe Leaders last Friday. Our focus was PB4L and the children spent the afternoon creating PB4L posters and playing games. Well done to all for some amazing creations, and to our Tribe Leaders who stepped up into their roles fabulously :)

PALs Training

Last Thursday, a group of Year 6 children went to the first of our PALs training sessions at Take Kārara School. This was run by Sport Central with an emphasis on fun games to play and behaviour management skills for the children to use. Fun was had by all.

WPS Art Exhibition at the Festival of Colour

Fabulous art works created by our youngest tamariki from Pods 2 and 3 are being exhibited in the Armstrong Room, at the Lake Wānaka Centre as part of the Festival of Colour.  Make sure to find time over the Festival of Colour period to pop down to view the exhibition, which is open daily 10-4 and is free of charge.

Photos show students delivering their art works and observing the set up of the exhibition, which was coordinated by local artist, Chrissy Wickes.

Pod 7 Visit to Arrowtown Museum

Yesterday Pod 7 were fortunate enough to travel to Arrowtown Museum to participate in a series of activities that focused on Aotearoa history.  These included a role play in a Victorian Classroom, a visit to the Chinese Village, panning for gold, and getting to touch important artefacts.  The day was a huge amount of fun, helped in part by all our wonderful parent helpers.

“My favourite part of the day was dressing up in the Victorian costume and using the school slate boards”  Robert Schmutsch

“I enjoyed panning for gold because it involved a lot of concentration”  Millie Campbell

“I enjoyed being Ms Grey’s favourite student and getting to sit in the front row”  Ellie Buchanan

PB4L SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours.  The current goal is:  'We are prepared, organised and on task'.

PTA NOTICES

PTA News

The Wānaka PTA Committee are urgently looking for a Chairperson and new members to join the team.

Apart from getting to know people and feeling great about helping raise funds for our awesome school, it can be a lot of fun coming up with ideas for events for the kids and parents.  It is a great opportunity to be involved in creating wonderful memories for our school community.  Due to relocation, our current Chair is unable to continue in the role and we are looking for someone who is keen to get on board and take over.  We understand our parents of WPS are busy and it can be hard to commit, however the role of the chairperson is to delegate and help come up with ideas and work together as a team with our other members.

Although we need a specific chairperson named for the compliance of the committee, this is a joint effort and we are all working together as a whole.  We are also seeking more parents to get involved on the committee, due to some recent members now not having children at WPS and having moved on, we are lacking in numbers.  There is no pressure to commit to every meeting or every fundraising event, but if there is one a year you are happy to help with or you even just want to come along as you have some previous experience and ideas, we would appreciate any contribution.

The PTA committee is an important team within our school, and it enables us as parents to be a part of that community and gives us a collective voice on behalf of our children and their families.  It is more important than ever after the past couple of years with Covid that we continue to aim to connect our families, teachers and administrators and build morale within our school environment.

Our PTA meetings are short and concise and do not take up a lot of your time.  We aim to do these once a month, sometimes with an extra meeting for a specific fundraising event subcommittee.  We like to change it up a bit and sometimes meet for a wine at a local restaurant and other months we meet at the school staffroom.  We have a number of events penciled in for this year, however we do need the manpower to pull these off.

Our next project is the Wānaka PTA Quiz night - if this is something you have been involved in before at a previous school or would just like to assist, please feel free to pop to our next meeting on Wednesday 5th April at 7pm.  As mentioned there is no commitment to join the PTA but without volunteers we will unfortunately not be able to proceed with these events.

In my time as the Chairperson for the WPS I have got to know the teachers and staff of the school and made great friendships with fellow parents and have found this extremely rewarding.  Unfortunately due to my work commitments I am unable to take back over that role, however would be more than happy to assist someone new to understand the position at the beginning and work alongside them.

Come along and see what it's all about!

Thank you

SPORT NOTICES

Upper Clutha Athletics

Last Wednesday was a sunny and clear day for the 2023 Upper Clutha Athletics Competition.  This was an opportunity for our children to compete against other 'local' schools and give them the stepping stone to the Central Otago Championships tomorrow in Alexandra.  Our children showed all the values of our school and were rewarded, 39 children qualified for the CO event.  Thank you to all the parents and supporters who were able to help out.  The Wānaka results are posted on the school sports page.  Good luck to all competitors heading to Alex tomorrow (weather permitting).

WĀNAKA TRAIL RIDE

Wānaka Trail Ride - Four sleeps to go!

This will be the last year for some of us in the organising crew, so if you think you might like to get involved in future events, come out on Saturday and get a feel for the buzz of the day.  A pleasant 20-min drive heading out over the Red Bridge towards Tarras on SH8A, and sign-posted left into Jolly Road.  The Men-Love Berries van will be there so you can grab a coffee or ice cream, and come and say hi to Gillian or myself in the Volunteer’s Tent.  We’d love to see you there.

A massive thank you to all those who have signed up to a volunteer position. Those of us in the organising team, those who love to ride the WTR trails, along with the staff and children of Wānaka Primary and Montessori Children’s House, are truly grateful for your support.

See you out there!

Cheers, on behalf of the WTR crew – Alix, Anne-Marie, Gillian, Jen, Lucy, Phil, and Steph

Where does our food come from?

Wao Aotearoa would love your help!  You may have noticed our supermarket shelves looking awfully bare in places.  And this seems to be becoming commonplace and an accepted issue.  So, what can we do about it?  Well, with your help we can improve the food supply in our community!

Take 2 minutes to complete this short food survey and help Wao and the QLDC build a roadmap to improve our ability to feed our community into the future.  Whether you buy all your groceries or you are an avid gardener, if you live locally, then your input is invaluable.

Lets go --------> https://www.wao.co.nz/food-resilience

Share with your friends and family too - the more we know about our local community food needs, the better the roadmap will be!
