CURRICULUM COMMENT

Student to Parent Reporting

It was absolutely awesome to see so many families back in school and the campus was buzzing!  I had goosebumps and felt quite emotional seeing children with their parents, heads bowed over children's evidence of their learning and a focused buzz of conversation going on, whilst classes were working all around them.

There was a fabulous turnout of mums, dads and grandparents - no less than 92% to 100% turnout in each class.  Wow!  And the feedback on the day (given spontaneously from many of our dads this time) has been that the experience has been very powerful and informative, with children presenting their learning, progress and achievement with passion, showing depth and understanding of what they are learning and their next steps.  Thank you all for your positive feedback to teachers and to myself.  These are proving to be a very valuable part of our reporting process.

Watch out for the mid-year written reports to hit your inbox on Thursday and remember that you can email your child's classroom teacher to book a face to face or online interview next term.  There is no formal booking process, you can just make direct contact with classroom teachers.  And of course as per our open door policy, you are welcome at any time to contact classroom teachers to arrange a time to talk about your child's learning at school.

School Holidays...then our annual Dance Week!

The school holidays start this Friday, with school finishing at 3pm as usual.  School returns on Monday 25th July and all of that week every child will take part in our annual dance week.  Students will learn a new dance with Dean or one of the crew (from the Dance company 'Dance Curriculum'...aka Ezra's dance from former years) and then on Friday parents are invited along to view these performances.  We are all so looking forward to this as it is a great week we all love and such an energetic, fun way to start the term.

Parent Satisfaction Survey Post Covid...(we hope it's post!)

A reminder that we would really appreciate as many families as possible completing this survey so we can find out how you felt the school has managed the difficult times of the last two and a half years with lockdowns and Covid.  This will enable us to look at our processes and improve these to better serve the next time we are forced to face similar circumstances.  The final day to complete this SURVEY is this Friday, 8th July.

Enjoy the Holidays

Make sure you get a chance to enjoy some YOU time in the holidays as well as spending time with your children.  Let's hope the holiday breaks the vicious cycle of bugs that seem to be causing so many absences from school.

Our Health and Education Ministries are highlighting the fact that other Covid/Omicron strains are on the way and we should be preparing for this.  We have been sent lots of extra masks and we will be giving the whole school a good clean over the holidays.  We have been warned that there may be times ahead where masks should be worn again and we must keep up our hygiene practices to keep bugs at bay.

Also a reminder to think carefully next term about taking too many days off school to go skiing etc.  We are really concerned about some of the low attendance rates we are seeing and the impact that is having on children's learning, progress and achievement and in some cases their social well being as well.  During the school week children should be at school - leave the skiing to the weekend.  Any leave for skiing (apart from our school programme) is an unjustified absence and any absence does impact on your child's learning.

Internet Health and Wellbeing Presentation

A reminder that this online presentation is tomorrow evening, Wednesday 6th July at 7.30pm.  See the poster below and here is the link to access the zoom meeting:

If you are unable to get the time to join this webinar, then don't worry as we will get a recorded version which we will post on our website under the parent section, once it is emailed to us.

Staff have a teacher webinar with John Parsons at 3:30pm tomorrow and your children also get a chance to join a student webinar on online safety also presented by John Parsons.  This is scheduled for tomorrow in school time, however classes too will have access to recorded versions if they are unable to link up tomorrow.  I have heard that John is an excellent presenter and that we will all learn heaps.

Wanted: Teacher Aide for High Needs Students

We are looking to employ a further teacher aide to join our team.  We require someone who is available to work a few hours most days.  The successful applicant will work with children who have specific behavioural/social needs.  Some experience in dealing with challenging behaviours in children is preferred.  Further and specific training will be provided at school once employment begins.

Please register interest or email any questions re the TA position to Leah at senco@wanaka.school.nz before Monday 18th July.

Mata Au Kapa Haka Festival

On Friday the 1st of July our senior kapa haka group attended this fabulous festival.  All the local schools in the area took part in a day of collaboration and celebration of kapa haka and reo.  The tamariki attended three workshops on waiata, games and creating a haka for our community.  We were joined by several ECE groups after lunch who performed for us and watched our school kapa haka performances.  A fabulous day led beautifully by many MAC students.
