Leaving Wānaka Primary School

If you and your family are leaving Wānaka Primary School at the end of this term and you have not yet notified our office, can you please do so as soon as possible.  Thank you.

Lost Property

We have a large amount of lost property in our pods and school office.  Please come and claim your lost property as we will be dropping off what is left at school to charity shops at the end of term as the office block is being painted over the holidays.

Parent Conferences

Parent Conferences are Wednesday 28th June and Thursday 29th June 3:15 - 5.00pm for most classes.  Bookings are live on the School Interviews website now.  The code for booking is - p4sqp.  Bookings will close at 5pm today.

Room 2 (Kylie), Room 7 (Jen and Andrena) and Room 21 (Kelly) will have their interviews on Tuesday 18th July and Wednesday 19th July between 3:15 - 5.00pm.  Please book on the School Interviews website with the code - kgk6n

Due to illness, interviews have been rescheduled for Room 13 (previously room 9 - Megan - only Wednesday's bookings), Room 8 (Charlotte B) and Room 27 (Coral).  Affected families should have received an email with a rescheduled appointment for the first week of next term.  If the time does not suit you please login to the www.schoolinterviews.co.nz website using code kgk6n to reschedule your booking.  If you have any queries please email office@wanaka.school.nz.

Snow Day Procedure

If snow occurs overnight, a decision regarding school closure, or a delayed start, will be made in the morning – we will notify you by the following methods:
  • Our school website – home page
  • Bulk email
  • Our School App
If the school closes during the day due to snow, we will notify you via the methods above – please refrain from phoning the office.  Buses will not run.  Children can be collected and signed out from their classrooms where they will remain under the supervision of a teacher.  If you are personally unable to collect your child, then other arrangements should be made for collection.

If a parent wishes to have someone that is recorded as an emergency contact collect their child, the pick up person should go to the classroom, provide identification (if not known to the teacher) and sign the child out.

Now is a good time to consider your emergency contacts – and ensure that the office has recorded the details of at least two people, living locally, who you trust to collect your child if the school closes due to snow.
CURRICULUM COMMENT

Pod 3 are now in Pod 4

As the Pod 3 teachers were away unwell last week, Jennie and Jason, along with the relievers and the builders, worked to get Pod 3 relocated to their new home for the year, Pod 4.  Well done team.  The fences will be going up around Pod 3 and this is the last pod that needs to be reclad.  Pod 7, which is cement board, only requires an exterior paint and is not being reclad.  Our builders have become so like family it will be sad to see them leave.  At least the building of the Maker Spaces will keep them here a bit longer.

Holidays - a time for the contractors to get stuff done!

Just a reminder, we ask that children do not come into school to play unsupervised over the holidays as it is a building site, with 3 different companies, doing three different jobs - the landscapers, the builders (who will be working on the roofs of other pods as well as ripping off the Pod 3 recladding), and the painters who are working to paint the interior of the administration block.  There will be a lot of people and machinery around as it is the holidays.  We would prefer your children to stay away, but if they do come in, they MUST BE SUPERVISED BY AN ADULT.

Central Otago Swimming Championships

Today thirty students represented the school and Upper Clutha district at the Central Otago Championships.  Congratulations to everyone for their awesome effort and behaviour - we are proud of you all.

A huge cheer for our champions and placegetters:

Year Six Boys
Winston Harper    1st in ALL his 5 events!
Tenki Watanabe    1st relay, 2nd Breaststroke, 3rd Backstroke, 3rd Butterfly
Willis McCarroll     1st relay
Nico Burrowes      1st relay

Year Five Boys
Bruno Blampied    1st Backstroke, 2nd Freestyle, 2nd Breaststroke

DEEP DIVE - Students Reporting to Parents

Nearly a 98-99% turn out of parents.  WELL DONE EVERYONE!
It was fabulous to see so many parents, (and grandparents), come to see what their children have been learning over the last 2 terms.  Students guided parents through their workbooks, progress, achievements, strengths and what they are working on, to showcase real learning in class that written reports can't capture.  I trust you found your children well prepared to share their work with you so you felt you got a good Deep Dive into their world at school.  Our kids love having you come in and sharing their school life with them.  There was an excited, very engaged and intense buzz throughout all pods for most of the day as parents came and went.

Don't worry Pod 3 parents you will get to do this next term, as Pod 3 teachers were unwell last week, and don't forget you will be doing this in Pod 4 due to the move.

Everyone should have received a written report for their child last Friday.  Please contact the school office if you have not managed to access your child's report. If you want a printed copy please ask and we will send one home.

Parent Conferences THIS WEEK

Please be prompt for your conference with your child's teacher this week, and come prepared with any questions or things you would like to know about.  You may have 'wonderings', from something in the written report or an observation from the Parent Deep Dive into your child's learning last week.  This is the time to talk about it.  Time is limited as teachers have to get through 28-32 conferences over the 2 conference days, so if there is anything you find you need to discuss in more depth please make another time next term to follow-up.

A reminder that the Parent Conferences for these teachers:  Andrena/Jen, Kelly and Kylie are in the first week of next term.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) Update

Over the last term, students have been collecting tribe tokens to try and win themselves a free mufti day.  These tokens are given out by staff and Manaakitanga Student Leaders to children who have been caught displaying our 4 school values.
Many, many tokens were collected this term and it was a very close competition, but this term's winners are...KEA!  Congratulations Kea, you can wear school and weather suitable mufti on Friday this week.

In other news, during Term 3, we will be updating some of our PB4L signage.  The new signs will include some symbols created by the students.  We are also embarking on a new initiative called Huakina Mai.  This involves implementing some changes to our already successful PB4L suite of evidence-based initiatives to ensure our school is being increasingly culturally responsive in the ways we uphold the values of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Term 3...Fun and Learning!

Yay, the first 2 weeks of Term 3 see us all learning some dances with Dean and the Dance Curriculum team.  Have you marked on your calendar the Friday 28th July afternoon performance?  We will confirm this in the first newsletter next term.

We also have a school from Australia, coming to see what we are doing with Deep Learning in weeks 1 and 2.

Murray Gadd is back in school observing teachers working with our student writers.  Murray is also offering a parent information evening where he will talk about children's writing, how teachers teach writing and what you can do to support your child.  Writing levels have dropped nationally over the last 3-4 years because of all the disruptions and with the emphasis on structured-type literacy programmes, we also need to make sure we nurture the art of writing for purpose, enjoyment and self- expression.  Murray is passionate and very, very knowledgable.  He is NZ's writing guru - so do not miss this.  Come along on Tuesday 25th July.

PARENT INFORMATION EVENING ON WRITING
Dr. MURRAY GADD 7-8pm TUESDAY 25th JULY
in our school hall
WRITING - What do we do at school? How can you support your child's writing development? What can we do to improve boy's writing? How important is writing for our children's future?  Murray may also talk a bit about his research and work internationally.  He is amazing and this is your one and only chance to come and hear him.  You will love him and what he has to say!

Parent Information Session on Your Children and Anxiety

-  an online, interactive presentation prepared for Wānaka Primary School by Life Education Trust
Cat Levine will share information about what causes anxiety in children, what it looks like and how we can help our tamariki manage it.  Wānaka Primary School asked if the teacher webinars could be morphed into one for parents as we were so impressed with the content and delivery of the information we gained,
so the wonderful team at 'Nurturing Healthy Minds', supported by the Life Education Trust agreed to do so.  The presentation will be at 7pm and will be live.  It is not being recorded - so you need to be here.  You will learn so much as a parent, on how to support your child through tough times.

Tickets (only to cover the cost of the webinar itself as there is no external funding for this) are available NOW from our school office.  We have advertised this community wide, to other schools and early childhood centres and only have limited tickets so make sure you get in and purchase yours early.  You do not want to miss out.

Child Anxiety is something that has escalated over the last 3-4 years and is a major issue schools and families are having to live with.  So come and join us and learn from an expert who is also very easy to listen to.
