Book Week at WPS
CURRICULUM COMMENT
Bugs and Illness
Lots of illness is still impacting on students and staff. Last week we had 25 active student Covid cases and on Friday alone we had 111 children off sick for the day (we averaged 100 students away each day last week). This week is looking pretty much the same with a number of staff sick, but only 1 with Covid. We had 111 students absent because of illness yesterday with 8 of those having Covid. Keep up those protocols we all know so well that help limit the spread of germs and keep children and yourselves home if you have any symptoms. The other primary schools in our area are also riding this wave of illnesses, including Covid for students and staff. So snuggle up, get in the colds and flu remedies and turn on Netflix!
Our Pirate Ship Reno is Nearing Completion
Wanaka Arts, with additional support from Resene ColorShop, is sponsoring an exciting new project on our pirate ship. Artist Nick Lowry, who specialises in large scale murals and set design, will be painting a colourful underwater mural that will complement the renovation of the pirate ship playground. Vivid coral, tropical fish and a playful pirate octopus will create a fun environment for make-believe sea adventures, refreshing the playground's existing exterior panels. Keep an eye out for this mural, which will complete the playground's transformation...coming soon!
Next Week
A reminder that:
Monday 6th June is Queen's Birthday weekend - school is closed.
Central Otago Rippa Rugby is on Tuesday 7th June in Queenstown.
The PTA are holding a Sausage Sizzle at lunchtime on Thursday 9th June so make sure you get your order and payment in (see notice below) by THIS FRIDAY.
Our Wānaka Primary School Swimming Sports is on Friday 10th June (please note change of date).
Recladding
The recladding of the admin block and Pods 1-6, by Cook Brothers builders, will now start in Term 3 17th October and will take 3 terms to complete (2 pods per term, and the admin block over the 2022 Xmas break). Hopefully this will not cause too much hassle as they will fence off areas they are working on. As Cook Brothers reclad each pod they will construct the makerspaces area at the same time. We are so looking forward to having this started after a number of delays with funding and material hold ups.
SCHOOL NOTICES
Maths Activity Night
We had a fantastic family maths night at Wānaka Primary. Parents all loved the Rapid Routines and learning a range of hands-on activities they can use at home to support their kids.
Look out for the maths slide show which will be added to the parent portal of our school website. It will run through Rob’s presentation and many of the activities we learned on the night.
STAR One Day School Community Meeting
Snow Day Procedure
If snow occurs overnight, a decision regarding school closure, or a delayed start, will be made in the morning – we will notify you by the following methods:
Radio Wanaka – 92.2FM
Our school website – home page
Our School App
Bulk email
If the school closes during the day due to snow, we will notify you via the methods above – please refrain from phoning the office. Buses will not run. Children can be collected and signed out from their classrooms where they will remain under the supervision of a teacher. If you are personally unable to collect your child, then other arrangements should be made for collection.
If a parent wishes to have someone that is recorded as an emergency contact collect their child, the pick up person should go to the classroom, provide identification (if not known to the teacher) and sign the child out.
Now is a good time to consider your emergency contacts – and ensure that the office has recorded the details of at least two people, living locally, who you trust to collect your child if the school closes due to snow.

PB4L SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL
Positive Behaviour for Learning - PB4L
PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.
Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours. The current goal is: 'We use the bugging off procedure when we need to'.

DRESS UP DAY THURSDAY 23rd JUNE
If your child has not already told you, on Thursday 23rd we have a school wide dress up day and parade. Children can come dressed as their favourite book character (or super hero or just in their favourite dress up). It is not meant to be stressful, it is just for fun.
We will also be having a BOOK SWAP and more details will be emailed in regards to this from your teacher. (It's about bring a book or 2 that you no longer want and the children will get to swap for another book.) Please do not send book/s in yet until an email has been sent out.
We have 2 wonderful authors (Juliette MacIver and Ruth Paul) coming to perform on the Wednesday and we will also be having a second hand book sale in the library courtyard all week - lots of good bargains! I really look forward to this school wide celebration.
Feel free toemail Melissa at any time if you have any questions.

KEEPING HEALTHY
Children with Allergies
We have several children enrolled at Wānaka Primary School who have potentially life-threatening allergies to both eggs and all nuts. Whilst the children are aware of the need not to share any food or drink - and all staff are informed of their medical condition - it would be helpful if all parents could consider not sending foods to school with their children which contain egg or peanut butter fillings or nuts of any kind. In this way we will hopefully reduce the possibility of this major health problem occurring.
This is not a requirement...but it is a request for your support and understanding to help us minimise the likelihood of an adverse reaction. Thank you.
