WEEK 5 We are half-way through the term on Friday! It is another busy week this week with students and staff going here, there and everywhere. Last Thursday we had the amazing Zoi Sadowski Synott come along and speak to the children. She actually emailed me to ask if she could come back to her old school and to talk to the students about her learning journey from school to being a ski champion. Not that she put it like that as she is such a modest, matter of fact young lady, who has not lost her zest for life and her ability to create goals and achieve them. We loved having you talk to our students Zoi. Yesterday we had everyone in the pink with our Anti-Bullying Pink Shirt day. There were some delightful concoctions and everyone made sure they practised being thoughtful, kind and respectful of others. Well done everyone. I may have forgotten to dress up for the last Tribe Day but yesterday I remembered, thank goodness. Anne and I have started working with our Sing Squad Year 5 and 6 singers. This happens every Tuesday from 12.15 through to 12.45pm in the hall. If your child would like to take part, or you think they would love to be part of our choir, remind them to come along. Some of our boys don't see it as cool (typical Central Otago mind-set) and we have some great singers so we would love to see them come along. I have done a bit of shoulder tapping - but have resisted a tackle and drag to get them there so far (: Today we have 80 students taking part in the Upper Clutha Rippa Rugby competition. We have 6 teams participating with 50 children in the Year 5 & 6 section and 30 (4 teams) in the Year 3 & 4 section. I know they will all have a great day and we will put the photos in as we receive them, hopefully before we dispatch this newsletter. Tomorrow we have Rob Profitt White in school working with the maths lead teachers from all of our UC primary schools, as well as Queenstown Primary School and some teachers from MAC. They will spend time with Rob in the morning talking about the teaching of tasks to build mathematical capabilities and then Rob will move into different classrooms to demonstrate effective ways of doing this, with critiquing afterwards to reflect on good practice. Jason and Jennie are off to a Numicon refresher course on Thursday. Numicon is a great resource for supporting students who find some maths concepts challenging. They will then come back and share their learning with the rest of their teams. A reminder that we have the Pod 2 assembly next Friday 2nd June at 2.15pm. Be prepared for a huge dose of cuteness. Pod 1s assembly last Friday was jam packed full of work that showed their wonderful learning over the last term or so and highlighted the confidence of the children presenting and their excitement about sharing their learning. Thanks for a fabulous assembly Pod 1. All of the assemblies this year have been awesome - I wonder if it has something to do with not being able to hold them over Covid - we appreciate being able to be part of them even more. Thanks to the great crowds of parents who are turning up to our assemblies - your kids love having you here at school sharing their school life with you. Mid Year Reporting to Parents Remember the Parent Deep Dive, where you come in and spend an hour or so with your child as they show you and tell you all about their learning, their successes, their challenges and show you the results of their work, in effect reporting to you on their learning. This is on Thursday 22nd June 11-12.30, 1.30-3pm and 4- 5pm. We have 3 parts to our reporting system - students reporting to parents, written reports and parent teacher interviews. Of these 3 the students reporting to parents is the most important part of the process. As a result of feedback from previous years we are not only sending written reports home through the portal, but we will also email a copy to every parent (as some have difficulty with the portal), and on request we will also provide a printed out, hard copy (as some families do not have a printer at home). Jason is the person to get in touch with on the 23rd June, which is the date reports will be sent out, for any issues or to request a printed copy. We will open the Interview Booking schedule for interviews (to be held on 28th and 29th June) with teachers, next week. We have set up this process again this year at the request of parents who preferred a structured format, rather than contacting teachers themselves. Please note that all 3 of these reporting options are available, but you may not feel you need to participate in all 3, especially if you are a parent who pops into class often. Please Buckle Your Children Up With this comment I am talking to parents out there more as a granny, than a principal. I am very concerned about the growing number of preschoolers and younger school aged children who are not being secured into car seats or into a seat belt. Please ensure your toddlers and preschoolers are not out of their seat or leaning out the window and they are buckled in securely. Please ensure your children are buckled in before you take off from the carpark or Pick Up Drop Off (PUDO) areas, even if you have to get out of the car to do so. I do try and help where I can but the driver is the one who must make sure children are secured before they drive off. It makes me quite anxious to see children who are moving freely in their seat or car. Since the beginning of this term I have seen 4 accidents around Ironside/Kings Drive with cars pulling out and hitting another. Particularly in the grassed area opposite the staff carpark entry, and the broken yellow lines before you come into PUDO, Drivers are parking irresponsibly and pull out suddenly or cut the corners, or park on corners leaving little room for other cars coming past. Carelessness, everyone is in a hurry, rainy weather, 'crazy' driving and CHILDREN NOT SECURELY BELTED IN, are recipes for disaster. Please keep your children, especially our wee dudes, safe. It only takes a minute. Have you also checked that your car seat is up to code? A faulty seat or belt can be fatal. Footwear Please keep in mind that any footwear children wear to school needs to be appropriate - children do phys-ed, play games and run around and even though modern footwear is cool some of it is not safe for the child. Can your child run nimbly in shoes that don't fall off or wobble about? Some Crocs for example may not be the best footwear for school even though the kids love them. Water Not Sweet Drinks A reminder that we would expect children to bring water bottles they can fill up with water, to school, as part of our Healthy Schools programme. Please no fizzy or sugary drinks at all. Thanks. |

Pod 6s Rosehip Berries Pod 6 have had a busy few weeks collecting, and storing rosehip berries. We now need to de-seed and dehydrate some of these for use next term. We still need more berries if anyone wants to head out foraging. We would appreciate these in whole or de-seeded form for dehydrating. You can find some info about the berries here: https://wilddispensary.co.nz/blogs/news/how-to-use-rosehips |

Zoi Sadowski Synott Visit WPS ‘old’ girl and Winter Olympic medal winner Last Thursday, we were privileged to have Zoi visit us. She inspired us all with her outstanding achievements, showing videos of her medal-winning runs, telling us stories and explaining how she made her dreams come true. Her message for us all was about setting goals and working hard to achieve them. At eight years old, she fell in love with snowboarding and began her journey to become an Olympic champion. We all got to see her medals and ask her questions before she visited the pods to sign autographs. She was truly inspiring. |

Creatives in Schools: School Wide Visual Arts Project Using the competencies of creativity and collaboration, and 'being the best they can be', the students of Pod 1 (previously Pod 4) and Pod 6 (previously Pod 5) have produced some stunning art work. With repurposed skis as their canvas, the children of Pod 6 had great fun painting images onto the skis to represent themselves. The awesome collaborative outcome is an arrangement of the skis to spell WANAKA. Supported by Pod 8 students, Pod 1 created a 3D model of our local landforms and waterways. The final result is fabulous - call in to the pod to have a closer look and to see the students' wonderful individual models too. Next week, they will continue with their preparation for painting landscape scenes onto the tiles at the back of the pod. |
