2 Weeks To Go Until Book Week

Lost Property

Please check your merino jumpers as we have a student who is missing their named WPS merino jumper.

Tribe T-Shirts

Tribe T-shirts will be available next week for collection from the school office for those that ordered them.

Snow Day Procedure

If snow occurs overnight, a decision regarding school closure, or a delayed start, will be made in the morning – we will notify you by the following methods:
  • Radio Wanaka – 92.2FM
  • Our school website – home page
  • Bulk email
  • Our School App
If the school closes during the day due to snow, we will notify you via the methods above – please refrain from phoning the office.  Buses will not run.  Children can be collected and signed out from their classrooms where they will remain under the supervision of a teacher.  If you are personally unable to collect your child, then other arrangements should be made for collection.

If a parent wishes to have someone that is recorded as an emergency contact collect their child, the pick up person should go to the classroom, provide identification (if not known to the teacher) and sign the child out.

Now is a good time to consider your emergency contacts – and ensure that the office has recorded the details of at least two people, living locally, who you trust to collect your child if the school closes due to snow.

FROM THE BOARD

Term 3 Enrolments

This year Wānaka Primary School is not taking new enrolments in term 3 for children who intend to engage in Cardrona's HPC competitive training programme during the school week.  Families coming to Wānaka will need to make their own arrangements for their children's schooling.

The correspondence school, Te Kura, is able to provide online learning whilst students are residing in Wānaka.  You can also approach your current school and seek online learning from them for term 3.
CURRICULUM COMMENT

Winter Ills and Chills

We have a number of staff and students who are unwell with a variety of bugs floating around out there; head colds, tummy bugs and Covid positive illness.  Please do not send your children to school if they are unwell.  Attendance is important but not if your child is unwell.  Staff have been given the same message - if you are unwell stay home.  We are a sharing, caring school but not with winter bugs.

What's Up Next Week

  • MATHEMATICS - what and how is your child learning in maths?  Next week is a busy week for parents interested in the teaching/learning of mathematics. On Monday parents are welcomed into their child's class to see a maths session in practice and Wednesday evening between 5.30 - 6.30pm we have a parents' information session where you can find out more details and ask any questions you may have with our maths lead team. Check out the notice about this included in this newsletter.  We also have a maths challenge for children next Wednesday 12th June, the sponsorship form for this was sent home with students last week.
  • WPS CROSS COUNTRY - is next Thursday 13th June.  Every class is involved in our school cross country. More information below.

Mid Year Reporting to Parents

As usual we put into place a 3 tiered process of reporting mid year.  This consists of a Deep Dive, where parents come into the classroom to share children's learning, look through their workbooks, work on the walls, deep learning projects, etc, written reports and parent/teacher conferences.
  • The parent Deep Dive day with your child is on Tuesday 25th June with 3 sessions available; 11am -12.30, 1.30 - 3pm, and 4 - 5pm
  • Written Reports will be sent home via email/Edge portal on Thursday 27th June
  • Parent/teacher conferences are on Monday 1st July and Tuesday 2nd July 3.15pm - 5pm.  A booking process will be set up for this.  We will also offer these conferences as online or telephone conferences to ensure everyone can have access to these.
Teachers are currently in the process of writing their student reports and you will notice that we have added in more space into the report format for reading, writing and maths comments.

We usually get a 95% plus response to our Deep Dives so we are looking forward to welcoming you in to classrooms to explore your children's learning and progress.

PB4L SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours.  The current goal is:  'I take ownership of my learning and behavior'.

World Environment Day Dress Up For Pod 1

This Wednesday, 5th June, is World Environment Day.  Pod 1 children are wearing green/blue clothes on this day as part of a gold coin fundraiser for Te Kākano Plant Nursery.  It was decided not to make this a school-wide mufti day due to the numerous events happening this term.  However, if any other children wish to make a gold coin donation to this wonderful local organisation it will be gratefully accepted.

Working Bee 1-3pm Wednesday 5th June

Tomorrow, Wednesday 5th June, is World Environment Day.  To celebrate the Enviro team are having a working bee planting in the native reference garden.

If you would like to join us, you are most welcome to come along tomorrow between 1pm and 3pm.  If you would like your child to take part, please email their classroom teacher giving permission for them to help.  Send them along with a change of old clothing and footwear (children love getting messy).

World Environment Day 2024: The Journey to a Greener Future

World Environment Day (WED) is an annual event celebrated on the 5th of June to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and enhancing our environment. Established by the United Nations in 1972, World Environment Day serves as a global platform for fostering environmental action and engaging communities in sustainable living. This year, the theme for World Environment Day is 'Journey to a Greener Future', focusing on the collective effort required to protect our planet and ensure a more sustainable future for all.
