Snow Day Procedure If snow occurs overnight, a decision regarding school closure, or a delayed start, will be made in the morning – we will notify you by the following methods: - Our school website – home page
- Bulk email
- Our School App
If the school closes during the day due to snow, we will notify you via the methods above – please refrain from phoning the office. Buses will not run. Children can be collected and signed out from their classrooms where they will remain under the supervision of a teacher. If you are personally unable to collect your child, then other arrangements should be made for collection.
If a parent wishes to have someone that is recorded as an emergency contact collect their child, the pick up person should go to the classroom, provide identification (if not known to the teacher) and sign the child out.
Now is a good time to consider your emergency contacts – and ensure that the office has recorded the details of at least two people, living locally, who you trust to collect your child if the school closes due to snow. |

Reports to the Board At last night's Board meeting SENCO Leah Allison presented the learning support report for Term 1 and 2 outlining all of the extra support programmes in place. Kerry Guise our Literacy Lift leader presented the Board with a report on the use of the Steps structured literacy programme throughout the school as well as the work that is being done with the teacher and TA intervention programmes for those children more at risk in literacy.
Around 50% of our children are either in some kind of extra learning programme whether that be learning support, behavioural support, health support or extension work which is something to be proud of. Strategic Planning Survey The Board considered the strategic planning survey that will be sent out to parents early in Term 3 to consult the community on their priorities for their children's learning over the next three years. Property The Board were updated on the reclad project, the irrigation and landscape project and other property developments including the maker spaces. The interior of the administration block is being painted over the upcoming holidays. |

COVID and other bugs are hitting us at the moment Three staff in Pod 3 are absent with Covid as are a number of children throughout the school with either Covid, a tummy bug or head colds and flu. We have sent a number home during the day as their health starts to fail. Please keep your child home if they show they are unwell. Some staff and students are wearing masks to protect themselves. Keep safe out there everyone… it is winter and it is normal for these bugs to be out and about. I blame the grey days - aren't they depressing! Mid Year Reporting in Brief - Parent Deep Dives are this Thursday 11-12.30, 1.30-3pm or 4-5 pm. Come in and your child will lead you through evidence of their learning. POD 3 is the only pod NOT taking part due to staff being unwell, so please do not go into Pod 3. We will let you know when the Parent Deep Dive will happen for Pod 3 by the end of this week.
- Written Reports are being sent home through our Edge portal and also by email this Friday. If you require a printed off hard copy please email the school office or jasonc@wanaka.school.nz
- Parent/Teacher conferences are Wednesday and Thursday next week. Have you booked yours? Here is the link to the booking system.

Strategic Planning and Reporting Along with the Curriculum Refresh the Ministry of Education are changing the processes in which they require schools to present their strategic plans and report to the Ministry. For us, I do not see much change as it is very similar to what we currently do and have been doing over the last 4 years while we have been waiting for a decision from the Ministry about their requirements.
We are required to consult with our community every three years with regards to our Strategy. This year is the final year of our current strategy. In week two of next term (Term 3) we will be sending every parent a Strategic Planning survey to gauge our community's priorities for Wānaka Primary School for the years 2024-2026. Look out for this as we would love to hear from you before engaging in any planning for next year onwards. The Board and staff will also be holding some discussion sessions with parents, based on ideas and priorities we pick up from the survey, so we can unpack them further with you. Parent Information Sessions about the Curriculum On Tuesday 25th July, our writing guru Dr. Murray Gadd, who has been working with our staff and learners all year, is inviting parents of Wānaka Primary School children along to hear about how you can support your child's writing development; how to help boys in particular with writing, and he will also go over some of the work he has been doing within classes here at school. He has done lots of research and has currently just returned from Scandinavia where he spent 3 months working with schools. He is very easy to listen to and has a depth of knowledge to impart. We invite you along to our school hall on Tuesday 25th, 7-8.30pm so you as parents can learn more about your child's literacy development, what the school is doing and how you can support your child within the home. This is relevant for all levels of learning at our school. This is an opportunity not to be missed, especially when considering that during lockdown and the associated home learning, writing was the learning area that suffered most. Murray will be working with teachers and students in school from Monday 24th July to Wednesday 26th July observing them at work teaching writing, analysing the lesson and the work the children are doing. This will further build our teachers' capability and added value for our learners. Reclad Update Pod 3 are moving into the newly reclad Pod 4 at the end of this week. Pod 3 will then be fenced off and worked on over the holidays and the beginning of next term. There will continue to be builders all over the school over the holidays and our gardeners as well as they start the Pod gardens. So remember that there will be further health and safety concerns for any children left unsupervised at school over the holidays. We ask that no children come to school during the upcoming holidays, unsupervised by a parent while our remediation work is happening. The administration block is having it's interior painted over these holidays, so there will also be a team of painters here at school - it will be all go and preferable not to have children around, so the workers can just get stuck in.
Please note the Board will take no responsibility for children left at school unsupervised over the holidays. Yay! Our Dance Week has been extended from previous years to 2 weeks this year! Week 1 and week 2 next term, we have the Dance Curriculum team coming (usually Mark and/or Dean) and they will be spending a longer period working with pod groups on moves and dances. They are awesome and the kids love it! At the end of week 2, on Friday 28th July, parents will be invited along to a Dance Performance Extraordinaire. Mark that day in your diary. This dance programme is funded by your school activity fee. NZ Playhouse Theatre Performance The NZ Play house theatre is performing 'Treasure Island' on Friday 28th from 9am-10am. We eagerly book this Theatre Company, as their performances are top notch. The following week, on 2nd August we have the author 'Deano' coming to share his work - he is a very dynamic and hilarious author and storyteller.
The cost of these performances also comes out of your school activity fee.
What a busy week, Week 2 of term 3 is going to be!!! |
