Parent Survey The parent survey will close on Monday 23rd August. So far we have received 150 responses and we hope that there are many more to come; you have the rest of this week and next weekend to get these in. It only takes 10 minutes to complete and asks you questions about the school, your child's learning and behaviour in relation to our systems and expectations, and also asks you about student well-being and achievement of students at Wānaka Primary School (Te Kura O Wānaka). All of the surveys are completely anonymous. Teacher Only Day - 'Learners as Designers' Our time spent together as a staff, with 2 excellent presenters last Friday, has served us well. Links were made to Deep Learning pedagogy including critical thinking, communication, creativity (we had to be 'a learner' in a group and build a structure), feedback, assessment and using digital devices as we explored the goals and use of Maker Spaces to capitalise on student learning. We also had heaps of fun - learning needs to be fun where it can be. We also identified the resources and equipment we need for the many learning activities that could take place in these Maker Spaces.
Here is another link about what Maker Spaces are so you can do your own homework in seeing the purpose of these. Cook Book The Cook Book committee had a preview of the near finished Cook Book 'Bite - Mountain Munches, Lakeside Lunches and Everything in Between'. It is looking totally awesome. We are now working towards pre-sales which will be happening at Friday Night Lights. The launch of our Cook Book is planned for Friday 29th October at Mediterranean Market. |

Bee News It is with great anticipation and excitement we share with you that Wānaka Primary School is in the early stages of introducing a Beehive to the school grounds (in the orchard behind Pod 8). The hive has been kindly sponsored by the Radford family (Honeysticks) and Barna (Tiaki Bees).
This is a growing trend within schools throughout the country and will provide a great opportunity to collectively help the bees, help the environment and educate the next generation about the importance of bees.
To ensure our bees can co-exist together safely at WPS, Barna has chosen the ideal position for the hive to be placed and will be managing the hives regularly and collectively with teachers/students, Barna will be providing learning opportunities to reinforce positive behaviour towards our bees.
By the way, this is a good time to remind you all of the importance of making your classroom teacher aware of any allergies your child may have and ensure all necessary medication is current, labelled and held at the school office. Co-written by Pod 8 students. |

ChessPower Central Otago Regional Chess Tournament This Monday, 16th August, Wānaka Primary School hosted the ChessPower Central Otago Regional Chess Tournament in our school hall. This year 57 players, from 4 different schools, took part and played 7 games of chess against each other throughout the day. For the first time we also had a strong (10 players) senior league with students from MAC and Cromwell College participating. Some of the senior MAC students started playing chess years ago in our WPS chess club and it was nice to welcome them back to our school for a day. We also had a junior and intermediate league with 15 players each and a big rookie league with 18 students who participated for the first time. After the 7 games we had lots of tired chess brains, empty lunch boxes and very happy students of all ages. Thanks to ChessPower and the other participating schools for joining us. We will take the 10 best WPS students of this tournament to the COREAP chess tournament at Goldfields Primary School in Cromwell in two weeks time. |

WPS Netball Well that’s a wrap for the Year 5/6 netball season for those girls who chose to play in the 3 tournaments. The last tournament was in Alexandra on Tuesday with 4 WPS Netball teams participating; with everyone dressing up to an Olympics theme! It was another awesome day of netball and the highlight really has been playing different teams outside of Wānaka. There were some close fought games along with a lot of laughs, fun and team mateship. Again our WPS girls all played with smiles, enjoyment and sportsmanship. Well done to all our girls in what was a very busy 2 weeks of netball and other commitments. And of course a huge thank you to coaches, umpires and parents who ensured our netballers could go and have fun through sport. Here’s to 2022! By the commitment and energy of these girls it will be another great season! |
