IMPORTANT NOTICES

Jason is on a BIKE hunt!

Jason is hunting for two old bikes (16-inch) that he can use at school as part of a special programme.  Do you have a 16-inch bike that has been lying in the back of your garage and is not being used?  Keen to donate to a great cause?  Jason is happy to complete any maintenance to make it fit for riding.

Please email Jason if you can help - jasonc@wanaka.school.nz

MasterChef New World Promotion

If you would like to donate your MasterChef reward stickers to Wānaka Primary School please drop them into the collection box in the office.  We would be hugely grateful and this would enable us to replace some of our ageing pots and pans from our Garden to Table kitchen.

Tomorrow - Supporting Children With Anxiety

Snow Day Procedure

If snow occurs overnight, a decision regarding school closure, or a delayed start, will be made in the morning – we will notify you by the following methods:
  • Our school website – home page
  • Bulk email
  • Our School App
If the school closes during the day due to snow, we will notify you via the methods above – please refrain from phoning the office.  Buses will not run.  Children can be collected and signed out from their classrooms where they will remain under the supervision of a teacher.  If you are personally unable to collect your child, then other arrangements should be made for collection.

If a parent wishes to have someone that is recorded as an emergency contact collect their child, the pick up person should go to the classroom, provide identification (if not known to the teacher) and sign the child out.

Now is a good time to consider your emergency contacts – and ensure that the office has recorded the details of at least two people, living locally, who you trust to collect your child if the school closes due to snow.
BOARD BUZZ

Board Buzz

At last night's meeting Jennie Croxford presented her NPDL (New Pedagogies for Deep Learning) Report.    NPDL started at Wānaka Primary School in 2017 and the 3 areas it encompasses are:  The 6 Competencies (Character, Citizenship, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication and Creativity), The 4 Elements of Learning Design (Learning Partnerships, Leveraging Digital, Learning Environments and Pedagogical Practices) and Deep Dives which in Term 1 and 2 have focused on How we use Deep Learning across the Curriculum.

Wendy presented her report and points to note include:
  • The last day of the school year for 2023 is Friday 15th December.
  • The recladding project is nearing completion - Pod 5 is now complete and Pod 3 should be finished by the end of the term.
  • Makerspaces - planning is still in progress but it is hoped this project will also be completed by the end of the year.
Francis presented the financial report for June and reported that the school is in a good financial position.

The next Board Meeting is scheduled for Monday 4th September, 5pm in the School Staffroom.
CURRICULUM COMMENT

Emergency Drills

Last week we held a fire evacuation and earthquake drill.  We will hold a Lockdown drill in the next few days. We hold these drills at least once a term at different times of the day to ensure staff and students are familiar with what they need to do. This is all part of our Emergency Procedures protocols.

Supporting Children with Anxiety Parent Information Session Tomorrow (Wednesday 9th 7PM)

So far we have been very disappointed with the uptake of this (as shown by ticket sales) given 1 in 5 children are suffering from some kind of anxiety and we are frequently being asked for support for parents to manage this at home.

We are hoping we have lots of door sales tomorrow night (cash only) as this is a valuable opportunity to learn more about anxiety in children. This is not a fundraiser. We are seeking a $5 entry to help cover the costs of securing the presenter and production of the interactive webinar, that will be shared in our school hall at 7pm. There are trusts involved in the production of this webinar who do not have the funding themselves to provide this opportunity for our community. The teacher webinars were excellent.

Please be seated by 7pm as the webinar will start promptly.

School Based and Snow Programmes This THURSDAY

Please make sure you send your children who are in the school based programme to school in sensible clothing and footwear on Thursday, including a warm jacket as they will be out and about and may be getting in amongst gardens, cooking, construction, painting etc.  This could be in school uniform or something more appropriate for the activity of the day - see the rotations below.

Year 0/1s - stay in Pod 2 with Charlotte and Sharon for the 5 weeks of the programme

All children are asked to gather at the hall at 8.55am (first bell) to be sorted into their groups and led off by teachers to their first activity.  Interval and lunchtimes will remain the same.  Please advise the office, with a reason, if your child(ren) is not coming to school on these days.

We have approximately 185 children in our school based programme out of a total of 540.  A reminder to parents of skiers/snowboarders that if for any reason your child is unable to go skiing (unless the ski fields are closed and then it is school as usual for everyone) please keep your child at home and not send them to school as they have not been factored into our school activities.

TRIBE AFTERNOON - This Friday 11th August - FIFA World Cup Theme

Don't forget tribe afternoon this Friday! Dress up in tribe colours or football gear for our Women's World Cup football theme :)

PB4L SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours.  The current goal is:  'Pause, Breathe, Smile'.

PTA NOTICES

Kiwiana Quiz Night

The Wānaka Primary School PTA committee would like to thank all of our wonderful sponsors, participants, teachers and volunteers for being a part of our Kiwiana Quiz Night. We appreciate all of the help and the effort that went into the event!

It was a great evening and we achieved our goal of bringing together some of our school community for a fun filled evening after a disruptive couple of years.

A reminder that we would love to continue to offer and host fun events such as the quiz night, and to do this we do require volunteers.

Due to a lack of support for Friday Night Lights we have cancelled this event for this year.

If you are interested in joining the PTA committee or would just like to help out with the odd sausage sizzle, please contact Adele on pta@wanaka.school.nz.

Thank you again, we look forward to the 2024 Quiz Night!
