CURRICULUM COMMENT

Roll on Spring

I don't know about you, but I am getting a bit sick of the rain!  Yesterday was just so glorious I can't wait for Spring to really settle in.  The psyche feels so much better when there is sun and warmth, and hopefully that same sun chases away all the bugs, flus and Omicron as well.  We deserve an awesome Spring and Summer, bug free.

Writing Achievement 2022

Currently Kerry, Jason, Jennie and I are going into every class to engage students in a writing activity which we will then analyse against national expectations so we can see how our WPS students are tracking overall, against other students at that year level in New Zealand.  We moderate using set criteria in a rubric, benchmarks and, in reference to exemplars or examples of writing, at each level.  We then sort all of the data, analyse the year level cohorts, as well as school wide, and also look at attainment according to gender and ethnicity.  We report the findings to the Board, usually annually but sometimes more often.  We also will provide the summary report to you nearer the end of the term when the process has been completed.  Look out for the link.

Calendar Art

Students are currently working on their art works to be published into calendars, diaries, sketch pads and cards.  This is an annual, and very good fundraiser for our school.  The art work is due in at the end of this week and then you will have the opportunity to view your child's artwork online and also to purchase it as well.  Check out some of these...

Next Week - Friday 2nd Sept is a busy, fun day!  READ THIS!

First of all there is the annual Fathers Day Breakfast starting at 8am.  Then at 10am the PTA and their helpers will be providing a hot chocolate or Milo drink for morning tea as a farewell to winter...we hope!  Remember to send along a named cup for this hot drink.  And after lunch we are holding a Tribe Day afternoon and it's all about Random Acts of Kindness!  Remember to send your children along in their tribe colours.

Teacher Only Day in Term 4

SCHOOL CLOSED for instruction MONDAY 28th November
Please make sure you make alternative arrangements for your children on this day as school will be closed for instruction.  Teachers will be working at school but on planning, assessment and reporting activities within their pods.  Please note this is the only Teacher Only Day we have closed the school for this year.  In 2023 as well, we will take most of the Teacher Only Days before the children return to school for the new year, as we did this year.  However we will have at least one day in 2023 where we will have a Teacher Only Day during the school year as that is the only time we can book in the specialist to work with us.

Literacy Lift and Steps Report

Tier 1 Literacy Lift and Tier 2 Steps are part of a school-wide review of programmes each year.  Our Tier 1 group is for children who need individual or small group work and the Tier 2 group, falling just below this threshold, works in larger groups with the senior management team of Jennie and Kerry.  Our goal is to provide overlearning and boost mastery, self-confidence and self-belief.

Children have been selected after analysis of Schonell spelling, Burt word recognition and Steps placement testing carried out in weeks one to three of term 1 by Emma and Marg, our specialist Literacy Lift teachers.

Tier 1 Groups - Literacy Lift Support
Monday - Wednesday 9am - 12.45pm
Group 1 has 15 children, 9 Year 3s and 6 Year 4s.  These are children identified as needing individual or small group work and use the Steps workbooks, StepsWeb and games and activities to meet their needs. This group runs 4 sessions, 9:00am - 9:45am, 9:45am - 10:30am, 11:00am - 11:45am and 11:45am - 12:45pm each of the three days.

Tier 2 Groups - Steps
These are the children who fall just below the threshold for Tier 1 support.
3 x 30-minute sessions per week
Tier 2 Group 1 works with 24 children from Years 3 and 4 and Tier 2 Group 2 works with 27 children from Years 5 and 6.

The following review is based on levels of achievement from the beginning of the 2022 school year until mid-April.  It would usually be a half-year review, however, due to StepsWeb upgrading course work, new levels did not line up with the scope and sequence of the previous version.  All children moved back to an area in the course where they could build on their knowledge of phonics, patterns and other grammar concepts to ensure ongoing success.  With another 2 terms impacted by Covid and other ailments, it was important to look at absences as part of the overall achievement of children in the Tier 1 Literacy Lift and Tier 2 Steps Programmes.

ChessPower Central Otago Regional Chess Tournament

Last Tuesday a team from our WPS Chess Club participated in the ChessPower Central Otago Regional Chess Tournament at Remarkables Primary School in Frankton, Queenstown.  Ten very keen and able chess players (4 girls, 6 boys) from our school played 7 games of chess against 33 senior and intermediate students from Remarkables Primary School.  Beside the unprecedented success they had in regards to the placings and qualifications for the Nationals, everyone had a fantastic time and learned a lot about playing chess in a tournament setting according to international standards.  Our students have shown amazing character and citizenship skills by helping and explaining to defeated opponents what they could have done differently and how they can improve next time.  They also found words of praise and encouragement for their opponents and each other and therefore made this tournament a great learning experience for everyone.  Well done team and a big thank you to Pedro Pimentel from Katalyst Media who joined us as a parent helper and took wonderful photos of our students.

PB4L SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours.  The current goal is:  'Levels of Responsibility'.
