CURRICULUM COMMENT

Friday 30th August

This Friday is looking like a busy one!  We start the day with the Father's Day Breakfast before moving into our Wana-Be-A-Star finals at 11.15am - good luck to all the finalists.  We then finish the day celebrating the learning in Pod 4 with their assembly.  Lots to watch and lots to celebrate.

Ministry of Education's Review of Enrolment Zoning

in the Upper Clutha

I have been asked a few questions about the Ministry's review of Enrolment Zones.
The consultation part of the process has closed and the Ministry will announce any decisions related to changes of zone.  This will not impact on any children currently at Wānaka Primary.  Please use this link to find out more about the process.

Author Visit - Mark Sommerset

Melissa has continued to bring a wealth of passion and experience into our wonderful school.  Last Tuesday she organised Mark Sommerset (the author of Baa Baa Smart Sheep) to inspire our kids.  He shared a few of his stories to the entire school and included many quips, stories and a song about what inspires him to write.

Thank You Wānaka Lions Club

Thank you to the Wānaka Lions Club for their donation towards extra-curricular activities at school.  We are delighted to receive this unexpected donation to help fill some of those funding gaps that seem to be getting bigger.

Maths - Parent Information Evening

Our parent maths information evening last Wednesday was attended by a small group of parents who heard about how our teachers have been attending professional development for the last 2 ½ years.  This PLD has focused on the refreshed curriculum and delivering a balanced, fun, individualised maths programme.

More than 80% of our students are succeeding in maths, and we are focused on keeping them engaged with our practical and meaningful teaching approach.  After the short presentation, parents had the chance to explore and participate in some of the maths activities, getting a feel for the interactive nature of our programme.

SCHOOL CLOSED ON FRIDAY 6th SEPTEMBER

Wana-Be-A-Star Finals

Join us this Friday 30th August at 11.15am for a spectacle of talent!  Eighteen finalists across the six year groups will perform for us, competing to win one of three trophies.  Years 1&2 will perform first, followed by years 3&4 and then our senior finalists take to the stage.

Bandquest Competition

We have a group of our Year 6 boys taking part in the Bandquest Competition, organised by Rock Shop.  They videoed their performance last week and have submitted it in the Online Section of the competition.  The band members are Riley Syben (keyboard), Isaac Wood (vocals), Bruno Blampied (drums), Rio Carnie (trumpet), Patrick Meyer (guitar), and Zac Perkins (bass). Good luck guys!  You rock!

St John Youth Programme

Congratulations Riley Syben

Riley Syben, Year 6, has recently competed at the Central Otago Youth competition, alongside former student Daisy Speak as an intermediate pair.

They both did incredibly well and were the overall winners of the Intermediate section and have been selected to represent Central Otago at the South Island Competitions in September.

The competitions involve first aid scenarios including resuscitation and use of AED, communication tests, and medical related tests along with the formal drill competition.

This is an incredible achievement for Riley who has so much passion and commitment to Hato Hone St John.  We are very proud of him.

Mabel Speak one of our penguins was also one of the chief marshalls for the day and did an incredible job, running teams to tests and dropping food off to judges.

For more information about the St John Youth programme please visit youth@stjohn.org.nz.

The Wānaka Division meets on a Tuesday night from 5-6.30pm.  Please feel free to come along and meet us and find out more about the programme or contact Tina Simmonds Divisional Manager at tina.simmonds@stjohn.org.nz.

PB4L SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours.  The current goal is:  'I can identify my strengths and be proud of who I am'
