Board Meeting this Monday 9th September Everyone is welcome to our 6th meeting for the year to be held at 5pm in the staffroom. Presentations to the Board include the Health Curriculum update (Kath Nicholson health lead teacher), the mid-year Learning Support Report (Leah Allison - SENCO) and camp organisation and health and safety (Jennie Croxford - school camps lead organiser). Out of Zone Enrolments for WPS are being taken for 2025 Since enrolment zones were enforced in 2020 with the opening of Take Kārara, the Wānaka Primary School roll has steadily decreased, as both Take Kārara and Hāwea Flat School rolls have increased. The Wānaka Primary School Board has made the decision to invite out-of-zone enrolments as we do not wish to lose any more of our staff and we want to fill some of our empty classroom spaces.
The notice below is appearing in the Wānaka App, Wānaka Sun, The Messenger and the Wānaka Primary School website over the next 3 weeks.
'The Wānaka Primary School Board gives notification that the school has 60 available places, across all year levels, and invites applications from parents for out-of-zone enrolments, for next year, 2025. All out-of-zone enrolments are subject to enrolment scheme legislation. If the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot.
The out-of-zone enrolment application deadline is the 27th September 2024. Information on the out-of-zone application process, together with the enrolment form and an out-of-zone application form (both of which are required to be submitted) are available on our school website wanaka.school.nz. If a ballot is required this will be held on 11th October 2024.'
Brendan Hearle Board Chair
(Please note that current and in-zone families are not affected by this process, only those who are not in our school zone but wish to apply for their students to attend Wānaka Primary School, starting next year. We are still awaiting the results of the recent Ministry of Education enrolment zone survey and how that impacts on current school zoning in Wānaka). Principal Appointment Update Applications for the Wānaka Primary School Principal position (to start in 2025) close this Friday 6th September. The Board will shortlist applicants at the end of term 3 and announce the successful applicant early in Term 4. |

Teacher Only Day Postponed TEACHER ONLY DAY THIS FRIDAY, 6th SEPTEMBER, HAS BEEN POSTPONED. The presenter who was delivering the professional learning programme for our teachers on Friday has informed us that she is unwell and is out of action for at least 10 days. So it will be school as usual on Friday and we will arrange a day in term 4 for the presenter to return and present day 2 of her Te Reo professional development sessions. Wana-Be-A-Star Wow! What a fabulous show. It was an absolute pleasure as a judge to watch our stars shine. Our children are so talented!
Congratulations to everyone who took part in this competition and well done to those who made it through to the final last Friday.
You all were tumeke and it was very hard to choose the winners. In my book you are all winners as you all performed out of your skins in the final, with passion, flair and mana. Thanks to the teachers for taking time out of their busy programmes to hold class and pod auditions and for their overall support of this annual event. Fathers Day Breakfast Thanks to the PTA for organising our annual Fathers Day Breakie. What an impressive turn out of dads with their kids. And those bacon butties were popular and very yummy. Thanks to Mitre 10 for the loan of their BBQ and two wonderful cooks who know how to cook their bacon and in great volumes. Thanks also to all the dads who came along and supported this great event. COPSSA Swimming Champs Students from all over Central Otago Lakes, representing their schools and zones (Wakatipu, Dunstan and Upper Clutha), took part in the Central Otago Primary Schools Swimming Championship today at the Wānaka Pool. Swimming for Term 3 Pod 3 have their swimming sessions from Monday 16th September through to Friday 20th September. Pod 4 are swimming the last week of term, Monday 23rd September through to Friday 27th September. Health Curriculum Consultation with Parents - Drop in Sessions Our lead teacher in Health, Kath Nicholson, is offering drop in sessions where parents can find out more about what our local health curriculum involves and to ask any questions you may have. Just drop in to the room off the hall, next to the hall kitchen during these times: - Monday 16th September between 2pm and 3pm
- Monday 23rd September between 5pm and 6pm.

Wana-Be-A-Star Finals If you were lucky enough to join us on Friday afternoon, you were treated to a fabulous showcase of the wide ranging artistic talents our students have. Nineteen Wana-be-a-Star finalists danced, sang, flipped, made us laugh, and treated our ears to some beautiful music.
Thank you very much to our judges: Wendy, Kit South, Taylah Doran and Joanna Hansen. They had the very difficult task of deciding who would take home the overall awards.
Rico Bonny flawlessly delivered jokes that had everyone smiling, earning him the junior trophy. Ben Morris amazed us with his self-taught breakdancing skills and was awarded a highly commended principal's prize. Oliver Waugh was presented with this accolade in the senior division for his sensational piano playing. Hazel Robinson sang a beautiful rendition of 'My heart will go on' to win the senior trophy. The judges couldn't decide between two stunning dance performances in the year three and four competition, and so Misadi Kadampita Gamladdalage and Nell Fahy deservedly shared the intermediate trophy.
Congratulations to all our finalists and thank you for treating us to a wonderful show. |

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours. The current goal is: 'We move on when things don’t go our way' He iti hau marangai e tū te pāhokahoka - Just like a rainbow after the storm, success follows failure

EOTC Day 2 On our 2nd EOTC day the Enviro/Garden to Table group carried out some more native tree planting along the walkway behind Pod 3 and 4. In the afternoon Petrina Duncan from Southern Lakes Sanctuary came in to talk to the group about introduced predators. We learnt about the important work that is carried out to trap rats, stoats, weasels, ferrets and possums. These pests can be found in our local area and pose a serious threat to our native birds. If you see any of the traps whilst you are out and about on our local trails, please do not touch or interfere with them. |
